The Dalles, Oregon is a city in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 30,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Multnomah County and home to the University of Oregon. The namesake of the town is Portland's first postmaster general, William Dall (1812-1892). He served as mayor of Portland from 1872 to 1874 and was also a U.S. Representative from Oregon from 1875 to 1880. Dalles had been named for General David Dixon Dall who fought in the Mexican–American War and later became governor of California. In 1907Multnomah County voters decided to change its name to honor General John Custer during World War I memory week when much of present-day Multnomah County was still part of Mexico City under American occupation. After this event new irrigation systems were built including one dam across Mill Creek which provided water for mills until it dried up in 1922 . From here Watertown took over providing all water needs until WWI when Dalles got their own stream system just upstream from current day Millennium Park On July 2 1850 Jno Hantz bought 4 acres (1 km²) next door to where Burnside Ferry crossed South Yamhill River near what is now Third Avenue NW he named his farm “Oregon Landing” after James Kenedy who had given him land southwest corner Salmon Run () below present day Tilghman Island (). The Dalles is a small town in Oregon, located on the banks of the Willamette River. The community was founded in 1868 by Ezra Dall and his wife Hannah. The name comes from the local stone which is found throughout the area. The town became a center for coal mining and logging during the late 1800s and early 1900s, but has since been largely abandoned. Today, the town remains a ghost town with only a few remaining residents. The history of The Dalles begins with Ezra Dall and Hannah who were two men who had come to Oregon looking for a new home. They metaddle of an old wagon train that was journeying down the Oregon Trail; they were able to hitchhike their way southward until they reached what is now The Dalles. There they erected a cabin and started to live there until 1868 when they decided to move upriver to what is now Salem, Oregon so that their children could attend school there. In 1870, Ezra bought 640 acres of land near present day Portland where he built his house called "Dalton House." He also started a small business called "The Grist Mill". By 1872, he had built another house next door which he named "Finch House". A year later, he moved his family into this house which served as their homes until 1951 when it burned down. After that fire, all of these houses were sold off and each individual's property changed hands multiple times before finally coming into private ownership in 1984 by Donny Peterson (the father of current owner) who currently resides in The Dalles.[1] Ezra Dall's arrival at Salem coincided with an important period for Oregon because it marked the end of pioneer life within the state boundaries; families like those from Salem began moving out into other parts of Western America[2]. It was during this time that Ezra developed relationships with various influential people such as David Sills and George Stephenson[3], leading him eventually become one of the most powerful men in central Oregon[4]. From here on out, his influence would grow even further as he began building up what would be one of centralOregon's most successful businesses-the coal mine and logging company known today as American Coal Company[5]. Unfortunately for him though, due to high prices for coal caused by overproduction during World War I,[6], American Coal went bankrupt just two years after its founding[7]. However, despite its failure saga overall-American Coal left behind an indelible mark on CentralOregon history-in both good ways(such as providing much needed employment during difficult times)[8]and bad ways(such as contributing greatly to environmental destruction).[9][10] nearly every resident in CentralOregon still remembers American Coal Company either through memories or stories passed down from family members who worked there.[11][12] Nevertheless-over time American Coal Company slowly faded away from public memory while its legacy lived onentially amongineligible individuals like Donny Peterson himself who spent countless hours researching its story specifically.[13][14][15] In 1951 however things changed when Donny Peterson purchased portionsof American Coal Company's former headquarters located in downtownTheDalls from John Ladd (an entrepreneur involved in real estate).
