The first Settlers were poor farmers who traded with the Native Americans for goods they could not produce themselves. christopher cooke, a minister from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania preached the first sermon in what is now St. Marys on October 12, 1753. over time, the town began to grow and develop around a small Presbyterian church which was built in 1787. In 1814, the state of Pennsylvania granted land to settle west of the Susquehanna River as part of Andrew Jackson’s western army campaign against Mexico. This ended up giving rise to what is now Erie County and parts of Luzerne and Lackawanna Counties in central Pennsylvania. In 1838, a new courthouse was built in what is now St. Marys and it served as the legal center for all of Western PA until 1861 when government buildings were moved to Harrisburg. In 1892, two banks replaced one another within one block in downtown St. Marys so that people could bank at one location while still having access to products available throughout the area including flour, cheese and other items necessary for daily life during this period of industrialization! A post office operated from 1892-1923; however mail volume gradually decreased as telephones became more prevalent throughout society! In 1951, local school board members decided that it would be cost effective to build an elementary school instead of maintaining an old high school building which had been unused for generations! The facility opened its doors on September 3rd, 1952! After years of hard work by our educators and parents alike (including many fundraisers!), enrollment has steadily grown through continued support from our community! Today we are excited to welcoming second grade students into our Schoolhouse District #2!

The town was named in honor of Mother Mary, the biblical figure who cared for and tended to the sick and needy. In 1850, Saint Mary's became a parish with its own church. The parish also had a school and a blacksmith shop. In 1871, the churchyard extension was built to accommodate more people who died in the surrounding community. The parish also erected a new courthouse in 1911 and hired architects to design an efficient layout for the structure that reflectedSaintMarys' importance as both a religious center and commercial center.
