St. Marys, Pennsylvania is a small town located in the Allegheny Mountains of central Pennsylvania. The population was 553 at the 2000 census. The community has been called "The Little Italy of Western Pennsylvania" because of its large concentration of Italian-Americans. The community was founded by Scots-Irish Presbyterians in 1795 as a farming village on the southern bank of the Susquehanna River. By 1847, when it became part of Erie County, St. Marys had a population of 1,500 and was known for its lace mills and embroidery shops. It lost its lace industry tonegie in 1925 and didn't regain it until 1990; today, St. Marys's largest employer is Farmers Insurance Company which operates a market garden center and five stores locally (the other four are operated by Fidelity National Bank). In 1951, after being one of three communities in western Erie County to be bypassed for development due to lack of available land, St.Marys became an incorporated town with a population of 1,471 people in 1995. In 2002 it annexed neighboring unincorporated communities Hopewell Township and Northumberland Township from Butler County; these were two times as populous as St.Marys itself but did not result in any growth within the boundaries granted to St.Marys by county officials - they remain villages with their own governments despite having no residents living inside their borders Today much interest surrounds the recently restored eighteenth century log church built by Reformed Presbyterian ministers near where Main Street meets US Route 11A (the only street linking all six villages) β popular among children who explore every nook and cranny because there are more than enough secrets hidden inside! Just outside town limits on state route 1213 (/old PA Turnpike), you'll find another impressive structure: an old anthracite mine that still yields valuable coal dust β one reason why this corner location has been called "The Coaltown." And what about those interesting abandoned mines off Route 11A? They probably hold something pretty special β just ask any local historian!

In 1792, the Parish of St. Marys was erected by Bishop John Carroll in place of the ancient parish of Bethlehem. The new parish was named for a special saint who had been martyred at Rome in 453 A.D.: Saint Mary, the mother of God. The Episcopal Diocese of Western Pennsylvania created the Parish on July 1, 1847 and placed it under the jurisdiction of its newly founded cathedral diocese. In 1877, Holy Cross American Orthodox Church became a part of our Parish and Father James J. Fee became our first priest and headmaster. Our parish today is one with many sisters and brothers who call us home!
The town of St. Marys, Pennsylvania was founded in 1765 by the Reverend John Monaghan and his wife Anne. The town was named after the Virgin Mary, who is honored in the local parish church, Immaculate Conception. The population of St. Marys peaked at 2,500 in 1800, but declined to 100 in 1820. In 1845, the first railroad to reach St. Marys was built through the town and its growth continued until World War II when it decreased to a single storehouse. After the war ended, there were no new businesses brought into the town and it slowly recovered until 1990 when a grocery store opened up and has been running continuously ever since.
