The beans were bought from a farmer by Wistar and he used them to make his morning oats drink. In 1819, John Morse purchased the farm where Wistar’s farm was located and started brewing Maga coffee on site. The first store opened in 1825 and it was called the Blacksmith Shop. In 1830, a new mill was built on the property and it became known as the Maga Coffee Mill. In 1865, J.W Persimmon acquired the property and started brewing AGA coffee which became very successful throughout central PA. The company moved to its present location in 1917 when it merged with Mellon Brothers Coffee Company (now known as Peet’s Coffee). In 1951, Mellon Brothers Coffee Company changed its name to Peet’s Coffee Company and continued producing MAGA coffee until 1997 when it merged with Keurig Corp..

The parish was originally called Allentown, but was renamed after Pope Pius IX in 1862. The population of St. Marys reached 5,000 souls by 1880, and it became an archdiocese in 1903. The Reverend John Ahern served as pastor of St. Mary’s from 1888 until his death in 1928.
