The Marines of the St. Marys Marine Barracks have deployed Gift History in excess of once a year since its establishment in 1945. The tradition began as an opportunity for Marines to give back to their community by giving something special away as a gift. In the early 1700s, a small Protestant community of about 100 people was located in what is now St. Marys, Pennsylvania. The town was named for Saint Mary, the mother of Jesus. There were also two other churches in the community: one built by Methodists and another built by Presbyterians. The first generation of settlers arrived in 1685 and soon began to build a home here. They organized themselves into a church and soon had a school, which they used to educate their children. It wasn’t until 1727 that they started to grow crops and build a mill on the river. As the town grew, so did its population. In 1802 it reached 1,000 residents and in 1847 it had 5,000 residents. In 1916 it became an incorporated municipality with a population of 20,000 people. Today, St. Marys has become an important center for religious services and cultural activities within the larger Pittsburgh metropolitan area

St. Marys, Pennsylvania is a small town in central Pennsylvania that traces its history back to the early 17th century. The community was founded by the Holy See and named for St.Mary of Bethlehem, who was born in the area in 1428. In 1783, a group of Catholic missionaries arrived in what is now St. Marys and began missionary work. One of these men, Father John McNulty, was instrumental in helping to build the first church in the town and also helped to develop the town's economy. The community saw some growth during World War II as many local businesses became involved in supplying wartime Japan with goods. After the war, the population dwindled as people left for other places within Central Pennsylvania or elsewhere across America. During modern times, St.Marys has seen a bumpy ride with various changes affecting its core values and demographics over time- including recent efforts by developers to gentrify the area and make it more accessible to non-Catholic residents (although this effort appears to be slowly dying down). Despite this volatility, there are still many people from throughout Central PA who visit or live within easy walking distance of St.Marys for their religious services and cultural experiences."
St. Marys was founded by the monks of Cluny in 476 AD. The first monastery was built on a hill near present-day St. Michaels Episcopal Church, and it was here that the monks served as missionaries to the area. In 1238, Pope Innocent III assigned the towns of Bethlehem and St. John's County to the Order of Friars Minor, which added Saint Marys to its territory. The townspeople petitioned King Philip IV of France for help in repelling an attack from Scotland, and Saint Francis Xavier dispatched his students to teach in St. Marys in 1539. The community grew rapidly, and by 1551 they had erected a new church and begun missionary work among the Indian peoples living in what is now eastern Pennsylvania. In 1569, when Queen Maud granted their request for independence from Great Britain, the friars moved their headquarters to what is now Philadelphia. They were given permission to build a new church at this site, which they did in 1682). The Sisters of Charity arrived in America with plans to establish hospitals throughout New England but soon realized that there was little land available for such a project without destroying valuable homes or plantations; accordingly, they began building conventicles (houses within houses) instead on sites along Second Street between Market and Chestnut Streets until such time as they could convert them into hospitals proper. So successful were these endeavors that within three years of landing at Plymouth Plantation (now Plymouth Meeting), sisters had built fifty-six convents--the largest number ever established anywhere in North America before 1790 when nuns retreated westward following religious orders' closure across Great Britain during the English Revolution). In 1813 two sisters died while caring for sick soldiers at Yorktown Peninsula during American Civil War; this led directly to Sister Lucia Flynn's founding of Our Lady's School (later Holy Cross High School) on Northampton Avenue near Elizabeth Street as part of her plan "to found not one only school but many schools". With over 1,500 female students enrolled by 1840—five times more than any other high school then operating east of Pittsburgh—Holy Cross became one of America's preeminent educational institutions through much of 19th century . This growth continued unabated until World War II when enrollment plummeted due largely to social changes brought about by industrial pollution resultant from munitions manufacturing nearby . After decades characterized by turmoil and struggle including several rounds of fundraising efforts spearheaded by Revocation Bishop John Donahue (1930–1963), Holy Cross experienced unprecedented success under Director Emeritus Sister Jeanne Lefebvre culminating with her installation as college president effective Fall 2009 .
