The United States Navy has a long and proud history of deploying gifts to the people of St. Marys, Pennsylvania. In 1952, Rear Admiral David Sperry presented Captain Harry Goudreau with an electric guitar as a gift for his service as music director at Naval Air Station Patuxent River Maryland. In 1959, Captain John Prentiss was presented with an American Rifle/Shotgun Model 1871 rifle/screwdriver combo as a gift for his service with honor guard at Philadelphia’s fountain square during ceremonies marking America’s 50th birthday year in office! In 1976, Commander Edward E Weeks became the first person ever awarded DSM(E) – destroyer escort – hull number DDG 71 when he received HMS Ark Royal(DDR)-class destroyer escort DDG 71 (Stainless steel superstructure). Commander Weeks had been assigned to Destroyer Squadron 29 based out of Norfolk Virginia when she was transferred from that squadron to Destroyer Squadron 38 which operated out of Jacksonville Florida! She served our nation faithfully until her loss in 1985 while deployed off Lebanon! After her return home she decommissioned and was sold for scrap metal! Aboriginal leader Shrinivas Kulkarni is honored every year with one or more gifts sent directly from members of the U.S militaryaresistance network - Shipmates International - during National Aboriginal Day celebrations throughout North America aboard HMCS Rainbow Warrior(LH-101). The USS Constitution (1797-1865) was the first ship of the United States Navy. She was commissioned on February 14, 1797, and served as flagship of Commodore James K. Polk during the Spanish-American War. The USS Constitution's homeport was Philadelphia, but she operated in various waters throughout her career. On July 26, 1898, she served as flagship of President William McKinley during his attempt to quell a civil war in Cuba. After serving in that capacity for two years, Constitution sailed for Guantanamo Bay with Admiral Dewey's expedition to capture Havana. She arrived there on October 2, 1898. Constitution decommissioned at Mare Island Naval Shipyard on December 15, 1898.
St. Marys, Pennsylvania (population: 9,000) is a small town located in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is the county seat of Beaver County and has a population of about 12,000 people. The name "Saint Marys" comes from the Germanic word for "holy mother". The earliest settlers in this area were Germans who came to the area around 1795. In 1824, a group of Catholic priests founded what would become the Sisters of Mercy order here. The nuns brought their faith with them when they moved to St. Marys from Pittsburgh in 1829. Today, there are more than 200 sisters living in St.Marys and its surrounding areas. Some of the traditions that have been passed down through the years include singing mass at night before going to bed or during feast days such as Christmas or Easter; celebrating Holy Week by fasting and prayer; using special decorum at funerals (elegant attire for mourners); observing Lenten fasts starting on March 1st and ending on April 5th; wearing traditional Polish dress for religious services during Holy Weeks; hosting caroling events on Halloween or December 25th each year; customarily serving communion at noon every morning after breakfast; and having an annual parish fair which includes arts and crafts booths as well as food vendors and games for children

The town of St. Marys, Pennsylvania was founded in 1701 by the Christian mission group of Saint Mary's Parish. The town quickly became a thriving community and has remained so ever since. The early history of St. Marys is reflective of the religious community that inhabited the area at that time. In 1701, a small group of missionaries from France arrived in what is now central Pennsylvania to spread Christianity to Native American tribes and their cultures. The missionaries were known as the "Soldiers of Jesus." They soon established a small Catholic Church in what is now St.Marys, which they called Notre Dame de la Providence (Our Lady's Chapel). Over time, other groups joined the Franciscan missionary group, and by 1812 there were over fifty saintly people living in the town. This growth led to increased demand for space within the chapel and it was moved to its current location on Market Street in 1827. During World War I, members of the parish went into military service and many residents volunteered their time and resources to support their brothers and sisters overseas. Many prominent citizens also contributed financially to help wartime efforts including Mayor John Haines who donated $10,000 towards building an air raid shelter in 1917-1918; Admiral William Sims who gave $1,000 for new church construction; Mrs. Edward Dutton who contributed $5 for each child she baptized during her lifetime; Reverend Jules Demaret who gifted land for a Catholic school; Father Rochefort who gave his home away from home as housing for local soldiers during World War II; Monsignor James McNulty who served as spiritual leader for both troops stationed at Arlington National Cemetery during Operation Overlord (the Normandy Invasion); Mr. & Mrs.-Edwards Koehler whose farmstead housed many troops during various phases of WWII; Reverend Joseph Laughlin-Popejoy whose statue graces Main Street - one half mile east of where St....
St. Marys, Pennsylvania was founded in 1755 by George Washington and the families of settlers who had come to the area from Maryland and Virginia. The town was named after Mary, the mother of Jesus. The population of St. Marys grew rapidly during its early years, reaching over 1,500 in 1795. In 1812, the town made a donation of land to the United States for use as a military reservation. In 1814, President James K. Polk designated St.Marys as the site for an experimental telegraph line between Pittsburgh and New York City. The first post office was established in St.Marys in 1817; it continued to serve until 1840 when it became part of Erie County. During World War I, St.Marys played an important role in providing food and munitions to American troops fighting on both sides; after the war, many homes were rebuilt with wartime materials or recycled materials from previous wars throughout central Pennsylvania and Ohio. In 1934, when Pennsylvania became a state within the United States, St.Marys became one of its first municipalities; it has since grown significantly in population and infrastructure since then with several major redevelopment projects completed such as Black Diamond Mall (opened in 1978), Northside High School (opened in 2000), and Interstate 80 (opened in 2006).
