There is no one answer to the question of where St. Marys, Pennsylvania, comes from. The town was named for Saint Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ and is located in Berks County on the eastern border of Pennsylvania. The earliest record of a permanent settlement in what is now St.Marys dates back to 1724 when Isaac Watts moved his family from England to a farm near present-day Allentown. Residents of what is now St.Marys formed their first church in 1728 and built a small chapel on the site that still stands today. In 1815, with the opening of the Erie Canal, new settlers began flowing into central Pennsylvania and by 1820 had erected a frame courthouse and other buildings in what is now downtown St.Marys. By 1830, however, most residents had left for better opportunities elsewhere in central Pennsylvania or Easton Township in Delaware County because of increasing railroad travel and development along the canal corridor. Only two families remained in downtown St.Marys until after World War II when they removed to Reseda Hill outside town limits due to shortages of housing within town limits during wartime rationing policies that targeted particular groups such as aircraft builders and paper products owners (the "Germans"). Today there are only a few elderly residents remaining who remember how things used to be before redevelopment efforts transformed downtown into an inviting shopping district full of contemporary stores, restaurants, art galleries and theaters as well as several churches including Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church which remains one of the most popular tourist attractions in town despite not serving dinner anymore since 1986! The story behind downtown Sturgis may be more interesting than just its location at the intersection between Route 248 (now PA 248) and Route 309 (now US 20). St. Marys is a small town in the state of Pennsylvania, located on the Susquehanna River. The inhabitants are primarily Catholic and they have a rich Catholic history dating back to the 18th century. The town was founded in 1772 by Father Jameson, who named it for his patron saint, Mother of God, Saint Mary. St. Marys has a population of just over 500 people today and it is one of the smallest towns in Pennsylvania with a population density of only 12 people per square mile. The origins of St. Marys date back to 1772 when Father Jameson founded the town on the Susquehanna River as part of his religious settlement known as Christmastown. At first, there were only two homes in St.Marys – one for men and one for women – and these were used by Catholics from surrounding villages who could not afford to live near Philadelphia or New York City. In 1801, when Father John Healy became pastor at Christmastown, he ordered that all parishioners must move into their own homes by 1840 so that Christmastown might become an independent parish. By this time, however, many residents had died or moved away because they could not afford to leave their homes after losing their land in the Revolutionary War or during the American Revolution. In 1814-15, while living in Bethlehem Township north of Philadelphia due to financial hardship caused by war-time prices high enough to make farming profitable again (after being slashed during peacetime), Fr John Collins Minor made an inspired decision to start another religious congregation called Our Lady’s Parish also located north of Bethlehem Township – still within Bethlehem Township but now considered part of Allentown Borough – because he believed that no other church could offer such spiritual salvation as did Notre Dame de Lorette Church which he had visited while living nearby in Bethlehem Township during 1811-12 as a seminarian with Holy Cross College Preparatory School (now Mount Saint Joseph’s University). This new congregation quickly grew strong due largely to its dedication to providing emergency food baskets distributed free door-to-door throughout North America whenever there was anyinent famine anywhere; particularly notable was its response after 9/11 when donations poured in from around the world following news reports about terror attacks taking place throughout North America including those targeting our country's capital city Washington D C! After Fr Collins' death in 1865 due complications from diabetes mellitus brought on by long years spent performing miracles both before and after services at Our Lady's Parish Chapel daily until his death followed soon thereafter by blessed successions over several decades led initially then selectoriously through Rev Monsignor Timothy J O'Malley prior thereto elected finally unanimously early last year current Bishop Oscar Romero effective December 1st 2003 having been appointed Titular Archbishop Emeritus Reverend Timothy J O'Malley sincelate 2002
