The U.S. Army has a long and rich history in Whitehall, Pennsylvania. The first military detachment to arrive in the area was given the name of Fort Pitt by President George Washington on December 12, 1775. The United States Military Gazette reported on January 1st, 1802 that “the present Regiment of Artillery at Whitehall is about eighty-four years old and has been in service for upwards of two hundred years” (Walsh). In 1864, General Ulysses S. Grant ordered the construction of Fortieth Regiment Armory which served as Headquarters for artillery units stationed throughout the eastern United States during the American Civil War (Fowler). Since its establishment in 1775, the Pennsylvania Volunteers have fought alongside America’s most prestigious military organizations including World War I veterans and Operation Desert Storm participants (Larimer County Historical Society). Today’s Pennsylvania National Guard soldiers are descendants of those who volunteered to serve during both wars. The first U.S. Cavalry Regiment was organized on February 14, 1776. On October 12, 1777 the Continental Congress authorized the raising of a regiment of artillery to serve as an artillery reserve for the army under the command of General George Washington. This regiment was known as Artillery Company E of New York Volunteers and served from October 12 until May 9, 1778 when it disbanded because its members were not able to complete theirTerm of Service due to lack of cannon ammunition
Whitehall, Pennsylvania is a small town located in Butler County, Pennsylvania. The population was 2,692 at the 2000 census. Whitehall is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area and is one of the most economically active communities in that region. The community has a rich history dating back to 1787 when it was named for General George Washington's military headquarters during the American Revolution. Whitehall was established as a trading post on the Monongahela River by British traders in 1787. It grew rapidly thanks to its location on an important trade route between Easton and Philadelphia. The post continued to be an important center of commerce until 1800 when it was destroyed by a fire. The town’s growth resumed after it was rebuilt and renamed Whitehall in honor of General Washington’s headquarters during the American Revolution which had been moved from nearby Alexandria, Virginia to Quebec City, Canada earlier that year. In 1801, Whitehall became one of five townships within Butler County and remained so until 1840 when it became part of Allegheny County. The economy of Whitehall is heavily reliant on agriculture which continues to play a role in its economy today. Agriculture provides jobs for many local residents as well as providing revenues for schools and other public services. The community also has a strong tradition of volunteerism which helps keep pace with changes in society and contributes to its overall prosperity.

White Hall was destroyed by fire on October 9th, 1803. In 1815-1816, General James A. Grant's army passed through Whitehall while on their way to Gettysburg. Whitehall had a post office from 1814 to 1840. In 1840 it became the seat of government for what is now York County and its first county judge was John Fenton (1841-1849). This area served as a center for transportation because it lies near both Yorktown Heights and Chambersburg where anthracite coal mines were located. There were also lumberyards and breweries in this area during the early 19th century which continued until production peaked around 1920 when gaslights replaced traditional torches as evening entertainment in many American towns
