The Rhode Island Infantry Regiment was a regiment of the Union army that served in the American Civil War. The regiment was created on December 12, 1861, from the merger of two previous regiments, the Providence I and Providence II Regiments. The regiment was assigned to the IX Corps under General Ulysses S. Grant during the winter of 1862-63. In January 1863, Grant transferred the regiment to Major General Philip Sheridan's command and they participated in his raid upon Richmond that February. During Sherman's march through Georgia in early 1864, elements of the Rhode Island Infantry Regiment supported him as he moved south. On April 14, 1864, Confederate States Army forces attacked a detachment of Union troops near Resaca Mill outside Savannah, Georgia; this attack resulted in a battle that lasted three days and cost significant casualties for both sides. The Battle of Resaca Mill is considered one of the most decisive engagements fought during the war. Aftermath: In 1865, much of what remained of Rhode Island's infantry regiment was destroyed by disease or surrendering to Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House[1].
Cranston, Rhode Island is a city in Providence County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 22,362 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Rhode Island and the second-largest in the Providence metropolitan area. Cranston's history dates back to 1637 when it was part of Narragansett Colony. The current borough of Cranston was created on July 1, 1871 from parts of three other municipalities: Dudley, Kingstown and West Warwick. The first white settlers in what is now Cranston arrived between 1736 and 1740 by boat from Massachusetts under the leadership of Captain John Brown. In 1741 they founded a town on land grant from King George II which became known as Providence Plantation after the royal governor who granted it. The founders were mostly Congregationalists ( Baptists) who wanted to set an example for their fellow English colonists living near Boston. The first African American to live in Cranston was Ebenezer Baptiste who moved to Rhode Island from New York City with his family in 1768. He started a small grocery store on Market Street and later opened a clothing store on Central Avenue near present day Watertown Mall before moving his business into what is now called Ebenezer Baptiste Place Cemetery. Providence still uses many British traditions such as election days being observed by an early morning service followed by lunch at St Nicholas Anglican Church before voting begins within the bounds of that parish; services are usually held at 7 am with results announced just before noon; Goods market open until 5 pm every day except Sundays; clockwise streets around town run clockwiseward starting with Market Street which runs east then southwesterly towards Federal Hill where Broad got his start as a tailor while working for Admiral Samuel Graves; during fairs all streets leading out of town are closed off so people can only come into town for eating or shopping etc.; cranston has one public high school (Providence Academy), two private high schools (West Warwick Academy & East High School), five churches - Anglican, Catholic, Protestant Lutheran/Anglican Methodist/Methodist Episcopal (MEMORY SCHOOLS), Pentecostal/Charismatic(PENTECOSTAL SCHOOLS), Jehovah's Witnesses - World Headquarters & Education Center (WHAEC)and two private academies - West Warwick Academy & East High School both closed down in 2006 due to budget cuts but reopened soon afterwards without any change Some popular places to eat include Billy Joe's BBQ restaurant across from Watertown Mall, Patsy's Pizza located on Moon Drive SE and Red Lobster located across from Federal Hill Shopping Centre

Cranston is a town in Rhode Island, United States. At the 2010 census, its population was 23,711. The town is named after Christopher Newport Island, which it replaced on the east coast of the state. The first settlers of Cranston arrived in 1636 and 1637 by boat from England. The first house built in the town was built by Nicholas Goudreau in 1761. In 1841, Cranston became a city and grew rapidly due to its position as an important shipping point on the Narragansett Bay naval base. The city declined during the 20th century due to economic decline and growth in neighboring Providence; however, Crannston has bounced back since 2000 with strong growth rates for both employment and housing markets that have kept it one of Rhode Island's most popular tourist destinations. The history of Cranston began with early European colonists who came to Christopher Newport Island in search of rich fishing grounds and new land to settle. After landing on Newport Harbor they erectedLog Cabin at present-day Point Defiance Square where they cooked their meals over open fires while awaiting word from home about what could be done with their new land. On November 4th 1636 two families - John Smith (of Plymouth) aboard ship "Providence" along with his wife Makedonia Huston founded Jamestown colony six miles north of present day Portsmouth when they landed on King's Wharf beside what is now known as Battery Park City.. On February 10th 1638 Major General William Penn sailed up Narragansett Bay from Warwick River anchoring at Warwick Harbour four miles south of Swansea Spit before sailing downriver towards Pawtucket harbor where he met Governor Thomas Tryon who tookPenn ashore at Whitehall Landing near modern-day downtown Providence . British forces under Captain George Monck burned Jamestown Colony upon landing but failed to take any prisoners or impedimenta because some Native Americans had helped resistance . This event marked the beginning of British colonialism in America . Captain Monck returned upstream to try again later that year but failed also because Dutch traders were already established in Rhode Island waters .. Captains John Smith (of Plymouth), Samuel Graves and James Newcomb explored much of what is now eastern Rhode Island before coming acrosslanded September 25th 1639 on Sandy Beach opposite North Kingstown .. They named their discoveries after English Admirals - Newport (Smith), Hope (Graves), Dartmouth (Newcomb) - making this one of only three times English ships visited American shores during voyage around world .. For many years thereafter English maps showed only part way between Point Defiance Square near Seal Cove Pointnovo square near North Kingstown as part of Providence RI while all other points remained called Kingston … until 1949 when USGS Geographical Names Server changed all major townships into cities…. On October 26th 1781 Lieutenant Colonel Ebenezer Kemble sailed from Portsmouth Navy Yard bound for Newport News Shipbuilding yard under construction on Narwhal Lane just outside modern day Portsmouth when he sighted Cape Ann Light bearing west about 12 degrees N latitude… Kemble determined it was not a Coast Guard Cuban lighthouse.. He anchored off shoreNOTE: At this time there were no wharves or docks anywhere within 2 mi [3 km] radius OF cape ann bay NOTE: As late as 1916 there WAS NO REAL WEIGHT OR TACKLING LAND ON THE COASTLINE! On December 5th 1781 Captain John Montresor reached Cocoa Point thence proceeded westward past Islamoquoit Lagoon then northwestward past Bircham Pond then northeastward past Woonsocket Harbour NOTE: By this time there were several small islands located within 3 miles [5 km] radius OF cape ann bay NOTE: All above activities occurred well BEFOREQuincy Adams got his magnificent estate across town – now known as West Side Village – starting things we know today as East Side Village
