The Newport, Rhode Island Coast Guard has been providing law enforcement and support services to the community since 1796. The Coast Guard’s mission is to protect the people and property of Newport County, Rhode Island by acting as a first responder to emergencies and traffic issues. Since its inception, the Coast Guard has donated many items and services to the community. Some of these include: over 1,000 pieces of maritime equipment, including life jackets, navigation tools, lifesaving gear and more; 200 patrol boats; 20 helicopters; six boat ramps; four training vessels; three weather stations; two fireboats; one pier. The Coast Guard also operates a number of unique programs that have helped improve the quality of life for residents in Newport County. These programs include: “Sea-Bees” which provides beach access for children in need; “Shipwrecked Sailors” which helps mariners who have lost their ship or stranded onshore find new homes and help with navigational challenges; and “ Coastal Clean-Up” which helps remove debris from beaches statewide. Despite all this generosity from the Coast Guard, no two years are exactly alike! Each year brings new donations and exciting new initiatives that keep our community moving forward. The town was founded in 1638 by English colonists and became an important seaport for Newport County. Newport is one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in New England, predating Plymouth Colony by more than two centuries. It has been called an "Uncle Tom's Cabin" for its role in the American Revolution. In recent years, Newport has become a popular tourist destination, with its beautiful architecture and historic sites.
The Coast Guard Gift History begins with the establishment of the United States Coast Guard in 1790. The Coast Guard’s mission is to protect and maintain our coastlines and maritime rights, privileges, and interests. Over time, the Coast Guard has issued a number of gifts to individuals and organizations in order to support its missions. One of the earliest gifts given by the Coast Guard was a watch from Englishman George Washington in 1795. Washington ordered two watches as part of his gift to Vice President James K. Polk during their visit to Philadelphia that year. In 1847, Captain John Cushing presented a set of threeandychronometer pistols to Rear Admiral Amos J. Steedman for his service on board USS Constitution during the Mexican War (1846-48). In 1889, Rear Admiral David Farragut presented a set of six torpedo launchers (the first U.S.) to Commodore Edward Eustis for use on USS New York during World War I (1914-18). Today, the Coast Guard continues its tradition of giving unique gifts that support its mission at home and abroad. Some examples include: • A model boat or harbor instrument from one of America’s many naval vessels stationed offshore; This Year’s Model – A $1,000 customized Harbor Instrument from HMY Britannia Royal Navy Museum; • A set of lifesaving equipment donated by military veterans who have served in various roles within the Coast Guard;

Newport is a town in Rhode Island, located on the Narragansett Bay. The population was 8,788 at the 2010 census, making it the most populous incorporated municipality in Rhode Island. Newport is one of two towns in Rhode Island (the other being Providence) that have both been established by Europeans as part of what became the United States of America. The town's first settler was Nicholas de la Salle and his brother John de la Salle, who arrived in 1634. The LaSalles founded a trading post on Narragansett Bayou and built a small chapel thereon. They also developed an agricultural economy with landowning families growing rice and corn, raising hogs and sheep, and providing local goods to market. Their port facilities served as a base for transportation between southeastern Rhode Island and points farther west including Boston. In 1785, General George Washington appointed Nicholas Lewis as Commodore of Newport's harbor to improve its position for trade with Britain. Captain Samuel Eliot Morison chronicled Newport's growth during this time: "No sooner had we got possession of these rich bayous than we began to make preparations for our future Twice-a-year fairs...Our traders from different parts brought their provision hither; so that soon we had an excellent market for all sorts of commodities." In 1806–07,Captain John Foust led an American naval expedition against British forces at nearby Portsmouth Naval Shipyard; after capture by American forces he was interned at Castle Hill until his release in 1808. He returned to Newport where he became Mayor under Governor James Davenport before dying at home on October 5th, 1824 aged 80 years old
In 1638, English settlers founded Newport on the east coast of Rhode Island. The town became a leading seaport and grew rapidly in population throughout the 17th century. In 1684, King William III of England granted Newport an act of incorporation which allowed for a single-member board of commissioners to manage the town's affairs. The city grew rapidly during the 18th century, and by 1800 it had become one of the most powerful cities in America. During the American Revolution, Newport sided with Great Britain, but after the war ended it regained its independence and became a powerful ally of America.
