The Newport Naval Shipyard was founded in 1795 and has been a part of the United States Navy since 1815. The shipyard produced many of America's first warships, including the USS Constitution and USS Intrepid. In 1934, the shipyard became part of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, which is now part of the US Naval Academy. The schools at both yards produce naval officers and sailors. One of the most well-known military gifts given to Newport was Admiral Chester Nimitz' 1938 gift to the city. Nimitz was then Commandant of the Marine Corps Schools at Quantico, Virginia. Newport is a town in Rhode Island, United States. The population was 17,090 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Providence-Fallon, RI-CT Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers to Newport were Pilgrims who arrived in 1636 and 1639. In 1644, English colonists founded Warwick Plantation on the tidewater of Narragansett Bay and began to develop it into a prosperous fishing village. In 1686, Congress passed an act that established Rhode Island as a separate country and named it after King James II of England. The new nation's capital was moved to Newport in 1785 when John Adams became the first U.S. president and his family moved from Boston to Washington D.C.. Whaling became an important industry in Newport during its early years but by 1800 it had been replaced by agriculture as the dominant economic activity in the area. By 1810, however, shipbuilding had become an important component of Newport's economy and shipyards soon developed along both Narragansett Bay and Bristol Channel near downtown where commercial vessels were built for export to Europe and America. Shipbuilding also generated jobs for locals during World War II; among those who worked at naval yards was Mayor Jimmy Vesey who helped create Portsmouth Naval Shipyard which became one of America's largest destroyer builders during World War II with designs that eventually led to USS Enterprise (CVN 78). In recent decades many businesses have closed down or been bought out including several fabricators of air conditioning equipment located just outside of town on Route 1A close to Interstate 95; this has led to increased traffic congestion around downtown which has interfered with business growth since 2000s On July 14th 2020 there was a large fire started by someone using fireworks inside what is now known as "the Newmarket" building located on Pearl Street between Broadwalk Avenue and John F Kennedy Boulevard across from Providence Regional Medical Center; only 5% damage was done with most firefighters being able to save much more than they would've if not for their heavy gear
