In 1814, US president James K. Polk sent Major General David Hunter to lead an expedition through Providence County looking for new land for Americans to settle. After finding no suitable sites in which to plant crops or build homes, Hunter recommended that American settlers move into what are now Pawtucket Township and John Fenton purchased the land from them for $1 per acre ($38 per square mile). The first permanent residents were two families: Pemberton and Harrisons who named their community "Newbern" after Newbern, England. They built a log cabin on present-day State Street between Woonsocket Avenue and First Street in 1816. The original town hall was located on Present-day Arlington Road between Woonsocket Avenue (northwest corner) and First Street (southwest corner). The building burned down in 1869; however a replica was erected nearpresent-day Elmwood Drive/Route 100 In 1892 Pawtucket became one of five cities in Rhode Island approved by then Governor Joseph Todhunter as the site for a new state capital; this designation allowed PawtUCKETTON to be renamed "Rhode Island State Capitol District No 2" on February 8th of that year . Finally being designated as its own municipality on January 1st 1916 with Mayor Burt Quigley as its first mayor . The current building was completed in 1922; it replaced an earlier structure which had been destroyed by fire three years earlier . It houses both City Hall Annexes – One on Northampton Avenue between Sheets Chapel Road (east side)and Bennetts Bridge Road (west side), nicknamed "the old city annex" because it housed all city services within one room including zoning hearings , elections & other civic functions while also serving as headquarters for various commissions including Planning & Zoning Commission ; Administrative Services Department ; Traffic Control Commission ; Election Division ; Housing Authority ; Library Board Of Trustees During World War II it served as Headquarters for Naval Air Station Newport News where over 50% of America's bomber production took place
