The Providence Navy Yard was the site of many important naval engagements during the American Revolution. Between 1775 and 1783, the yard produced more than 1,000 warships, including three frigates that served in the Continental Navy. The Revolutionary War also saw an influx of sailors from Narragansett and other maritime towns in Rhode Island. These men were used to help build ships at the navyyard, as well as man defenses against British forces. During World War II, Providence Naval Shipyard played a significant role in both America's war effort and its victory over Nazi Germany. After Pearl Harbor, Japan threatened to sink American submarines using underwater mines; if this happened, thousands of Rhode Islanders would have died. To prevent this from happening, President Roosevelt ordered that all Japanese-owned vessels be turned over to the United States Navy. This move resulted in the largest peacetime investment in American naval history.
