The Rhode Island Air National Guard's 388th Airlift Wing was founded at Warwick Municipal Airport on November 10, 1942. The wing served as a flying Training Unit with the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. In 1945, the 388th Airlift Wing became an operational member of the United States Air Force when it was activated at RAF Lakenheath. It flew transport and cargo planes for USAF missions in Europe and Southwest Asia during the Cold War. The wing drew its first combat mission in 1952 when it conducted aerial refueling operations over North Korea. From 1990 to 1998, the 388th Airlift Wing provided airlift support to Operation Desert Storm. In 2001, following the terrorist attacks on September 11,the 388th Airlift Wing supported Operation New Dawn by providing airlift support to NATO forces in Afghanistan. In 2009-2010, the 388th Airlift Wing participated in Exercise Noble Eagle which is a multinational exercise organized by NATO nations that aims to improve interoperability between their militaries

It was re-activated on 12 December 1951 at Warwick Municipal Airport and became an aerospace research squadron. Inactivated on 15 September 1957 and its assets reassigned to South Carolina ANG.

Warwick is one of the most economically prosperous towns in New England and has been called "The Hub of the School District." Warwick was chartered as a town on December 10, 1693 by John Warner and others. It was named for Sir Augustine Warwick who had served as Ambassador to France. In 1892, Warwick became a city with a population of over 20,000 people. The city's first mayor was Abram J. Goode and its first City Councilor was George Whelan Jr.. In 2003 the city voted to become an international city with status granted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). On November 5th of that year, Mayor David Duchovny announced that Warwick would be becoming an international sister city with São Paulo Brazil after cooperation between their cities began in 2000.
Air Force gift history dates back to World War II when the United States Air Forces began providing air support for Allied forces. Warwick, Rhode Island (formerly Cranston) is a town in Providence County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 27,542 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Providence–Worcester Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled by English colonists in 1636 and was named for Sir Warwick de la Pole, 4th Baronet. The original frame building now known as the Town Hall was built in 1734 and remodeled in 1802. Warwick began to grow rapidly during the 19th century due to its strategic location on Narragansett Bay and its access to transportation including ferries from Portsmouth Harbour. By 1900 it had a population of over 50 people and a cotton mill which produced cloth for British export until 1916 when it closed down because of World War I shortages. In 1925 the town's public school system merged with that of Providence; however, Warwick continued to maintain its own independent school district until 1972 when all public schools in Providence became part of the new School District 5). After years of decline many businesses closed down or moved away during the Great Recession while others struggled through difficult times; however, recent economic growth has led to renewed development in Warwick with several new housing developments and an increasing number of jobs opportunities for locals and workers from nearby towns such as Brockton, Worcester, Ipswich, Pawtucket, South Kingstown and Westerly.
