In 1811, John Hostetler founded the Anchor Steam Navigation Company in Providence with his brother Jameson Hostetler. This company became one of the largest shipping companies in America and its ships transported more than 2 million pounds of cargo across the Atlantic Ocean! One of John Hostetler’s sons, Edward (1810-1898), started brewing coffee at anchor on Narragansett Bay as part of his father’s business ventures. By 1863, Edwin had founded Anchor Coffee & Tea Corporation which became one of Rhode Island’s leading commercial concerns! At its peak few families owned more than 1% of all Anchor Corporation stock! During World War II, many jobs were lost due to wartime rationing; however, Anchor Coffee survived because it produced Class A munitions such as gasoline tanks! In 1945, Edwin Hostetler passed away leaving behind a legacy of philanthropy that continues today! His son Edward continued developing Anchor Coffee into one of American commerce’s most successful private enterprises! Today we continue to roast our own beans and distribute them throughout Rhode Island!
