The population of Conway reached 10,000 by 1870. By 1901, Conway had grown to 24,000 residents. However, World War I caused many economic problems for Conway and its economy collapsed. After the war, Conway experienced another growth spurt until World War II began to cause again some economic problems for the community. In 1950, Conway became an independent city when it joined Beaufort County as an urban area.
