The first post office in Conway opened in 1835. In 1916, the U.S. Route 601 bypassed Conway and became US 501 instead; the old route is now known as Old US 501 (Old Rd). After World War II, many businesses closed down and people moved away from Conway because of its high crime rates. However, some people who had left reopened a few businesses until it finally declined completely after 2000 when it had an overall population of only fifty-two people according to 2010 census data. In recent years there has been an effort to revive the town with plans to bring back antique shops, restaurants and nightlife options like live music at local venues
