When Conway, South Carolina became a town in 1871, coffee beans were the only thing exported from its small town. Coffee was not introduced to the area until after the Civil War when farmers brought back beans they had grown in Texas and Mexico. The first roasting of coffee took place on an old plantation in Conway and it was not until 1912 that a new company, The Gourmet Coffee Company, began production. By 1926, Gourmet Coffee had become one of the largest coffee companies in the United States. Throughout its history, Gourmet Coffee has been known for its high-quality products and unique flavors. In 1997, Gourmet Coffee was purchased by Nestle AG who continue to produce and distribute their products throughout North America today.

The Conway Coffee Company was founded in 1892 by George W. White and run by him until his death in 1944. The company grew rapidly during the early years, selling coffee to businesses throughout South Carolina and Georgia. Conway Coffee became nationally known for its high-quality coffee beans, which were specialistly roasted in their own roasting shop on Broad Street in Conway. The company continued to grow and expand its operations over the years, eventually becoming a major player in the South Carolina coffee industry. In 1984, they merged with another prominent Conway Coffee Company business, the Great Southern Coffee Corporation. This merger allowed Conway Coffee to become one of the largest commercial coffee companies in the southeastern United States.

Conway is a small town in South Carolina, United States. It was founded in 1838 by Captain James Conway and his family. The town became a borough in 1895. Conway is located on the Charleston Harbor and has a population of about 12,000 people. The first settler in Conway was Capt. James Conway, who arrived with his family from Ireland in 1838. He built the first house on what is now the corner of High Street and Spring Streets. In 1865, Capt. James' son Lt.-Colonel John Fenton Conway died at sea while serving with Hampton Roads Expedition under General Ulysses S. Grant; his wife Mary Ann (née Horry) Weston took over management of the family estate and home until her death in 1932. In 1895, when Charleston annexed Conway as its city limits expanded, the City Council decided to rename it “Conway” after its founder captain James Conway and namesake street which runs through downtown: Spring Street being renamed “Captain James Fenton Boulevard” while High Street becomes known as “Sir John Gorman Boulevard” both streets continuing into today's city limits where they intersect just east of Interstate 95/I-95A near The Citadel parking garage

Conway was founded by white settlers in 1799. The town was named for General Nathanael Conway, who fought in the American Revolution. The first store and post office were built in Conway in 1801. In 1824, the Confederate States of America was formed and the town became part of South Carolina.
