Conway is a town in Pickens County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,153 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Conway were two families from Scotland who arrived in 1782. They named their new settlement "New Hope." In 1834, the General Assembly passed an act to establish a public school district and provide for its own maintenance. On April 26, 1835 (the date of the first general election), James Sargent became the first resident of Conway when he purchased land east of present-day State Road 9 and donated it to the school board. In 1860, while still part of Pickens County, Conway voted to become its own municipality under state law. The vote followed a petition drive by local residents which had been led by Mayor John Copley. The town's charter was adopted on October 15, 1860 with Judge Wm Higginson as mayor and JnoG Fenton as clerk.[1] On February 12, 1861 Confederate soldiers fired upon a group of Union troops who were marching through town on their way to Beaufort for duty; four men were killed and twelve wounded including one man born in Conway who later died from his injuries at Beaufort Naval Hospital.[2] This event made Conway known as "The Battle Born Town" because so many Confederate casualties were inflicted there during that particular skirmish. A post office called Conway was established in 1881,[3] and remained in operation until 1965. The name change may be due to concerns about possible connection with another post office established nearby by mistake - New Hope - which also served as an interim name for several years before being changed back to Conway proper after some confusion among residents caused by this oversight. In 1915–16 Congressman Julius Caesar Smith sponsored legislation providing federal financing for economic development projects within thirty miles of Charleston along Interstate 95; this Act designated $10 million which would be used specifically for developing business opportunities within six western South Carolina counties – Pickens, Fairfield, Laurens., Spartanburg (then Jasper), Berkeley (then Clarendon) and Orangeburg – including Conway Township.[4][5] This project eventually led to the founding of SCATech Incorporated in August 1995 downtownuncertainty surrounding its legal status following a successful challenge against zoning laws enacted by then-Mayor James Dooley[6][7][8][9][10]. Conway is a town in Union County, South Carolina, United States. It was founded in 1853 by the Wofford brothers. The town was named after General Conway, who fought in the American Civil War. The population was 2,562 at the 2000 census. The Wofford brothers were instrumental in founding Conway and are buried there. They arrived in what is now Union County on December 12, 1853, with five men and three slaves. The Woffords built a log cabin and started farming the land they acquired. In 1865, they sold their farm to James Aiken and his family for $1,000. James Aiken donated land to build what is now Conway High School; he also funded its construction. In the early 1900s, many residents of Conway worked as farmers or miners in nearby Morehead City (now Lexington). When World War I began in 1914 and raged across Europe for several years, many people from Conway enlisted in the military or left for other countries to help support their families during that time of conflict. After the war ended, many of these veterans returned home and resumed theirnormal lives until changes came about during World War II when more people decided to migrate westward into Arkansas because of available jobs there (the so-called "Arkansas Migration"). Many Conway residents chose to stay behind and continued farming or mining although some moved away entirely due to economic reasons such as increased competition from other towns around them (such as Georgetown). By 1970 there were only a few remaining residents living within sight of downtown Conway thanks largely to an influx of new inhabitants from surrounding towns which had all become incorporated into larger cities during those years such as Columbiaburg (today's Lexington) and Greenville (Greenville County today). In recent decades however growth has again begun encroaching on downtown areas with development taking place adjacent to both east Quincy Street which links downtown with Interstate 85/Interstate 96 northbound/southbound access points while also providing views over much of central Union County towards Charleston; this has led some locals concerned about possible damage done by developers should growth continue unabated etc.; nonetheless annexation plans have been put forth but no decisions have yet been made either way As part of efforts initiated by Mayor Bob Moffatt various enhancements have been made including better pavementing streetscape improvements along with stormwater management Improvements which will reduce flooding issues consequent upon heavy rains events inside city limits; these come at a cost effective rate given that similar projects have successfully been implemented adjacent outside urban area A number of restaurants remain open throughout summer months serving up good food at bargain prices making it easy for locals and tourists alike not just to enjoy local cuisine but also provide sustenance necessary for day-to-day needs
