The Sioux Falls Coffee Company was founded in 1912. It is the oldest coffee company in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The coffee was ground and roasted at the original location on Center Street. In 1951, the company moved to its current location on 6th Street.

Sioux Falls was founded in 1868 by tribe members who left the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation to settle in this region. Indian Agent John H eitner named the town after Sitting Bull, leader of the Lakota Sioux Tribe which had been living on the Standing Rock reservation. The population peaked at over 200,000 in 1930 but declined thereafter due to various factors including World War II and general economic decline throughout South Dakota during those years. The city was founded in 1876 as a railroad town on the Missouri River by United States Army officers who were stationed in nearby Fort Pierre. The population grew rapidly after the railroad came through, and by 1907 Sioux Falls had become one of South Dakota's largest towns. During World War II, much activity took place in Sioux Falls because it was an important military base for the Allies. The University of South Dakota (USD) was established here in 1945 and has since grown into one of South Dakota's most popular universities. In addition to USD, many other significant institutions have been built or are currently being built in Sioux Falls such as Baptist Health System, Macy’s Department Store, and Toyota Manufacturing Center.
The Sioux Falls area had a rich history before the arrival of Europeans. The first European settlers in the area were French people who arrived in 1763. The area was at that time part of the Sioux Nation and they named it after their traditional leader, ChiefSioux. The French people left in 1767 and several years later, Dutch colonists arrived on horseback and by boat. They called the area New Orange County because of the orange trees they saw growing wild in central Minnesota. In 1854, the United States acquired this land from theSioux Nation and renamed it Sioux City after General George Armstrong Custer's famous cavalry charge against Native Americans at Little Bighorn Battlefield near present-day Sioux Falls.
