Athens, Tennessee is a small town in Johnson County, Tennessee. The population was 1,844 at the 2000 census. Athens is located on the Cumberland River, just east of its confluence with the Ohio River. The townsite was first settled by families of Scots-Irish extraction in 1827. In 1830, General Andrew Jackson and his army were landed at Athens to attack Mobile Bay forts. General Jackson's forces set up camp here and planted cannons on high ground overlooking the river below. The site became known as Battery Park Heights after this event. The area around today's Athens was originally forested with oak and hickory trees that were cut down around 1800; these trees provided lumber for local buildings and also served as a source of fuel for early mills which operated on the riverfront until about 1840 when steamboats began replacing river boats for transportation purposes. By 1870 there were over 50 mills operating along the Cumberland River in Johnson County alone; most of these operations used wood from nearby forests that had been stripped of their valuable resources by white farmers during the early 1800s land rush following westward Expansionism throughout Tennessee. In 1892, Athens voters passed an ordinance designating April 6th as "National Women's Day". This event marked one of the earliest occasions when women participated actively in American society through political activity such as organizing protests or working to improve public hygiene standards in their homes or communities across the country. The Peach Commission Report released in 1918 recommended Cooperative Extension programs be established throughout eastern Tennessean so farmers could sell fruit directly to consumers rather than go through large dealers . These programs proved successful enough that similar programs soon sprang up throughout Appalachia
