The Clarksville Air Force Base was opened on September 3, 1957, and has been the home of the Tennessee Air National Guard's 1st Bombardment Wing since 1959. The wing is a subordinate unit of the United States Air Force's 8th Bombardment Wing located at Eldorado Army Range in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The 1st Bombardment Wing is responsible for providing combat air services to USAF units in the Memphis-based 4th Combat Wing and its subordinate units throughout Southeast Tennessee. Since its opening, the 1st Bomber Wing's mission has included providing strategic bombardment support to numerous warfighting missions worldwide. In Iraq and Afghanistan, members of the wing have played an essential role by launching more than 2,000 munitions strikes against enemy targets. Additionally,the wing provides training and operational support to local military forces components and coalition partners while performing joint air defense missions against potential threats both inside and outside our borders. Through it all, however, the wing has always been about giving back to those who matter most – its members' families. Since 1945 (when MissouriAir National Guard fighter pilots), membership in one's family has been core component of how these men and women have helped support their country through service in uniform. Today there are over 575 spouses/common-law partners who contribute with their time or money towards maintaining Unit morale as well as supporting Squadron assets such as aircraft Hangar No. 2 on AFB Clarksville Tennesse On October 25th 1961 when Colonel James Fenton assumed command of No. 367th Fighter Group from Colonel John Rickenbacker Jr., he also assumed responsibility for squadron gift history which began with his predecessor’s lone gift - a Beechcraft Kingair ATO-4A Crusader built for LtCol William Purdy (Class of 1934) flying Officer Candidate School at Randolph-Macon AFB Georgia In 1965 Captains Don Sperling (Class of 1951) & Ted Ellison ( Class of 1953) became interim commanding officers upon Col Fenton’s retirement & Maj George Kipper took over effective February 1966 until LtCol Bob Lattimore relieved him on May 6th 1966 . during this time frame new squadron Headquarters building was completed at Clarksville AFB which served as Squadron Maintenance Annex from June 1968 thru November 1969 . It was here that maintenance assignments were consolidated with other commands within AFSCME(now known as DoD Military Sealift Command) prior to being moved into fleet hangar #1 at NAS Whiting Field FL effective December 1971 LtCol Don Sperling donated his personal collection including items from WW2 thru Vietnam along with period related memorabilia from Pilot Training School class 1929 thru 1952 inclusive On January 11 th 1990 Captain Jeffery Jantz became commander when Captains Russ Hines (class of 1988) & Patric Cates resigned following their tour in Saudi Arabia where they were assigned duty controller plans task force operations region III This event marked an end to gift history at CFB Clarksville after nearly fifty years
