The Clarksville Air Force Base was first established in the early 1940s as a civilian airport and then became part of the United States Air Force. The base has been continuously operational since World War II, and today is home to one of the most diverse air forces in the country. The 165th Fighter Wing is one of only two fighter wings in the United States military that specializes in fighters, and it operates more than 100 aircraft including Boeing 787 Dreamliners, F-15E Strike Eagles, and F-16 Fighting Falcons. The 165th Fighter Wing also provides support for Operation Joint Vision 2025 which seeks toestablish a global network of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) to conduct counterterrorism operations. In 2018, this wing was awarded $266 million from Congress to help fund their programs and expansions across twelve states. Today, there are over 5,000 people working at Clarksville AFB both full-time and part-time on various aspects of the military. This includes servicemen and women who serve on active duty as well as retirees from both U.S. Army and Marine Corps units stationed here during wartime or peacetime periods. When World War II began, Nashville Municipal Airport served principally commercial aviation with small numbers of military aircraft based there including Curtiss P-40 Warhawks used for training pilots cadets at nearby Hillsboro Army Air Field before being transferred south to Clarksville AFB where they would fly combat missions over Europe until disbanded in 1945 after the war ended. During World War II, Nashville Municipal Airport served primarily commercial aviation with small numbers of military aircraft based there including Curtiss P-40 Warhawks used for training pilots cadets at nearby Hillsboro Army Air Field before being transferred south to Clarksville AFB where they would fly combat missions over Europe until disbanded in 1945 after the war ended; however due to its proximity to Knoxvillle City Hall – now known as Downtown Clarksville – it continued to be used for government activities such as public hearings held by city commissioners prior to annexation into Tennessee by statehood on December 12th 1941 which eventually led to downtown becoming an important center for business growth within the new state boundaries while other portions were developed into residential areas such as east side neighborhoods around Gaylord Parkway/Hillsboro Avenue northward until Interstate 40 reached town limits just outside present day Downtown; finally west side neighborhoods between I‑40 & US‑270 until it met near Old Hickory Boulevard east side neighborhoods between I‑70 & US‑27 became predominantly industrial areas providing jobs for residents while eastern portions surrounding downtown remained mostly rural until suburbanization began moving beyond Knoxvillle City Hall into what is now eastern Shelby County years later
