Clarksville is a small town in Sevier County, Tennessee. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Knoxville metropolitan area. Clarksville is located on the eastern border of Sevier County and the city of Knoxville to its west. The first settler in Clarksville was James Wades, who arrived in 1802. He built a cabin on what is now Broad Street. In 1810, David Baird bought land in what are now Clarksville and White Oak Roads from James Wade. David Baird family operated a grocery store until they sold it to John Beattie in 1827. Beattie turned the store into a cotton gin and married his daughter, Sally Beattie, to William Hite in 1830. The Hite family ran one of Knoxville's first stores until 1865 when they moved out of town and opened their own store on Third Street called "Hite's Corner." In 1868, John Browning purchased land from David Baird for $1,000 (). He built a plantation house called "Browning Manor" which he used as his home and office from 1870-1872 when he became General Manager of First National Bank in Nashville. When he died childless in 1892, his estate passed into hands of his nephews (John Browning Jr., Ollie Hays) who leased it back to Mr. & Mrs.(Linda) Kirkland for 10 years beginning October 1st 1898 before giving it back to the school board on November 5th 1912 following an appeal by Dr.(Mary Alice) Graves against an order from Mrs.(Rosalind Noyes). In 1951 local resident Margerette Aiken became Mrs.(Eleanor Mae) Hardesty with her husband Roy Hardesty playing baseball coach at Vanderbilt University where she would later teach special needs students while also coaching girls' basketball team that won state championships in 1955 & 1957; both teams were coached by Hardesty’s father during those years – Roy Hardesty Sr.). After Mrs.(Eleanor Mae) Hardesty’s death her husband continued coaching girls’ basketball team until retirement which ended after the 1971 season; however hardiness Stadium still stands today as one half of historic Grady Hall inside former campus gymnasium complex that housed both schools through 2011-2012 seasons despite having been pronounced unsafe by city officials due to numerous deficiencies including cracked concrete pavements around building perimeter sidewalks & windowsills (& other safety concerns), crumbling plaster walls throughout facility; lack of fire sprinklers & high wind turbines near seating areas inside stadium making it difficult even for experienced coaches/players alike to get players off court during thunderstorms; extensive damage done to railing around all entrances leading up stairs inside stadium resulting not only in loss of access but also exposure within large open space once interior/ exterior wall surfaces had become severely scuffed/matted over from years Of stored rain water fell directly onto surface then seeped through structure all over interior & exterior walls creating anoxic environment similar To that found inside old brick factory building adjacent campus gymnasium complex which served as home away from home for many decades before finally being condemned by City Officials this past summer prior to demolition - rendering Grady Hall [now] just another memory among countless others lost amidst countless others never allowed[to] be resurrected or improved merely because [city officials deemed] lessee(&builder(Mr.)&Mrs.) lacked proven financial responsibility sufficient To make such significant improvements possible!
