In 1881, local farmers formed a cooperative to market their produce with help from Northern railroadroads which then connected Milledon with larger markets farther away than where they had been able to sell their products before. This helped make Milledon one of the most important cotton centers in south-central Tennessee during the antebellum period because it enabled farmers to avoid transport costs associated with getting their goods north or eastward across country into larger markets like Louisville or Cincinnati etc.).
