The Portland Naval Shipyard, which is now the Multnomah County Museum, was founded in 1879. The first naval shipbuilding facility in the United States, it produced ships for the navy and other maritime interests. The yard produced a range of vessels including submarines, destroyers, and frigates. The Portland Naval Shipyard closed its doors in 1966 but not its production capability. In 1987, Multnomah County purchased the property from the Navy and has used it ever since as a museum focused on naval history and culture. Today, Portland Naval Shipyard is home to a variety of exhibits relating to maritime history dating back to 1879.

In 1974, Enterprisewas decommissioned and donated to the Navy as surplus property. He later became Commandant at US Naval Academy where he remains today as an emeritus professor emeritus. 3. The USS Constitution (CVN-46) is named after General George Washington Carver, who worked alongside Commodore Matthew Cushing on developing white rice farming methods in Africa during the 1800s AD. Carver also provided financial assistance for construction of Fort Monroe across Newport News Bay back then! In 1992, Constitutionwas decommissioned and donated to the Navy as surplus property along with her sister ship HMS Repulse (RN/LF). They now stand side by side at Norfolk Naval Shipyard waiting to be rehabilitated into new ships once again! 4. The USS Preble (LCS-5) was named after Rear Admiral Vernon Jumper Preble III who played an important role in starting America's involvement in Vietnam through his command of Task Force 79 which helped secure Saigon against Viet Cong infiltration throughout 1969-1970! Although not actually commissioned until 2006 (!), this warship finally arrived at Hampton Roads last year after years of planning and preparation! She will serve as a training platform for future navies worldwide!
