Andrew Johnson, arrived in Tullahoma on February 2, 1827. In 1830, Tullahoma voted to secede from Tennessee and become an independent state. On October 12th of that year, the United States Congress passed a resolution recognizing the secessionist efforts of Tullahoma and other towns in what is now western Kentucky and eastern Tennessee. On November 3rd, President James K. Polk issued an executive order compelling all states within Confederate territory to recognize the secession of Texas as well as Tennessee's secession from the Union. Tullahoma continued to exist as an independent municipality until it merged with Knox County on January 1st, 1907; however, some remnants of its early history can still be found today at various businesses and residences including: Donelson's Store (founded in 1820), Olde Hickory House (built c1830), Fort Campbell Museum (opened in 1886), Knox County Courthouse (opened in 1906), and City Hall (built 1913).
In 1819, Tullahoma was founded by the Tennessee Volunteers as a military post on the Cumberland River. The town grew rapidly and in 1835 became the capital of the Cherokee Nation after its independence from Georgia. In 1865, Tullahoma was burned by Confederate forces during the Civil War. It was rebuilt and renamed City of Tullahoma in 1907.
