After years of struggle, however, in 1840 Tullahoma became part of new Tennessee statehood. In 1865, during the American Civil War, General George Armstrong Custer's forces attacked Native Americans at Big Horn Hill near present-day Damascus Chapel on September 16th. Many natives were killed or captured as result of this attack. As a result of this attack, many residents fled into neighboring Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma). By 1870, however, most Tullahoma residents had returned to their homes. Over time much has changed about Tullahoma – its economy has been greatly impacted by various industries such as oil production; its demographics have undergone dramatic changes due to high levels of immigration; and its infrastructure has been greatly improved thanks in part to federal funding initiatives such as Appalachian Regional Commission programs which have brought jobs and development closer to townspeople
The town of Tullahoma was founded in 1819 by James Fenton. It became a U.S. post office in 1825, and then a city in 1851. The city was renamed Tullahoma in 1912 after General John Pemberton, who served as the first governor of the Tennessee Valley Authority.
