Baytown is a city in Harris County, Texas, United States. The population was 761 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Harris County and part of the Houston metropolitan area. Baytown is located in east-central Harris County on the Arkansas River. The original baytown site was called "New Baytown" by developers who surveyed it in 1879. Today's baytown site was first settled by German colonists in 1836 and named "Hooker's Point". In 1865, General Sam Houston bought property from Peter Cooper for $5,000 and renamed it "New Baytown". On November 3, 1881, Texas State Senator James Fenton submitted an ordinance to name the new baytown after Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter USN (1849–1924), commander of forces during the American Civil War and one of Houston's most important subordinates. The ordinance received unanimous approval from both the city council and citizens. On February 20, 1886, New Baytown became a town when its incorporation as a municipality was ratified by voters in a special election. In 1907, construction began on what would become known as Memorial Park which includes today's downtown area along with several other neighborhoods including: Armoury Row (now Humble Heights), Oak Cliff Gardens (now Oak Cliff Towers), Coconut Grove/Belmont Shore/Pinecrest Estates/Carriage House Row (now Carriage House Row East), Shipyards Quarter (Now Discovery Green) and more recently I-10 Corridor Area redevelopment dubbed "The Zone" that has since grown into one ofHouston's most vibrant urban areas. In 1960s BayTown experienced rapid growth due to oil exploration activity offshore; this led to increased development near downtown with several high-rise buildings being built such as JPMorgan Chase Tower and First Baptist Church Cathedral Square just west of I-45 North before eventually fading away following gas prices dropping below $2 per barrel in 2000s while heavy industry closed or moved out leaving little evidence except for some abandoned warehouses left behind

Baytown is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the county seat of Harris County. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. The area that now Baytown was first settled by Acapulco people in what is now eastern Galveston County in 1795. In 1836, a group of Texans led by Sam Houston founded what would become Baytown with land grant from President James Kenedy. The town developed rapidly as a seaport for immigrants coming from Mexico and Cuba before becoming an industrial center during the late 19th century with shipbuilding, cotton ginning, oil production and other businesses. In 1912, Baytown became one of two cities in Texas when it joined Dallas as part of a split fromHouston following annexation by Dallas in 1896. At its peak as a municipality with a population over 100,000 people it had among its top employers such as Drexel Burnham Lambert steel company (now known as ArcelorMittal), American Telephone & Telegraph Company (AT&T), Texaco Refineries Inc., Dow Chemical Company (DowDuPont) and many others. However during World War II Baytown's economy shifted towards military production due to wartime needs such as munitions manufacturing and shipbuilding while also experiencing some growth in retail services related to post-war reconstruction efforts such as new shopping malls which sprang up throughout Greater Dallas/Ft Worth metroplex after 1945 until they were gradually phased out during the early 21st century due to faster suburban expansion within those regions.

In 1848, Baytown was annexed to Austin and renamed there. It served as the capital of the Republic of Texas from 1849 to1857. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Baytown was captured by Confederate forces and became part of Alabama. Following the war, it returned to Austin control and remained an autonomous city until its annexation into Houston in 1959.
