Belton, Texas is considered to be the birthplace of gourmet coffee. In 1886, a French immigrant named Emmanuel Gourdon started the first café in Belton and served quality coffee until World War II. The first Starbucks was opened in 1971 in nearby Fort Worth. Today, Belton's cafes serve up delicious blends of espresso, drip, and teas from around the world. Some of the most popular brands include Peet's Coffee and Tea, Blue Bottle Coffee, Caribou Coffee Company, Baja Fresh Mexican Restaurant and Moretti's Italian Cafe. The city was founded in 1879 by John Belton and his brother-in-law David Barger as a cattle ranch on the east side of the Little Colorado River. Belton's first post office opened in 1881. In 1902, it became a borough; it was again annexed to Lubbock County in 1969. The population of Belton peaked at 3,619 in 1987 but has since declined modestly due to various factors including loss of jobs and steady growth within neighboring towns such as Midland and Edinburg. today Belton still has a strong sense of community spirit that is appreciated by many residents who call this "the little town that can". The city's downtown area which includes the historic district and First Baptist Church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Today most businesses have moved out or been acquired by other larger cities making downtown difficult to visit but there are still some interesting shops and restaurants remaining including JBS Hardware & Home Center which is also home to one of Lubbock County's only independent movie theaters (the Coliseum).
