Burleson is a city in San Antonio County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,546 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of San Antonio County. The city was named after General John Burleson who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The first Europeans to visit what is now Burleson were Indians led by Capt. José de la Llave and Lt. Francisco Valenzuela on July 3, 1835. They had been traveling through central Texas when they came upon what they thought was an empty land grant from Spain that lay east of Lake Austin on this side of the Rio Grande River. On July 12, 1835 Captain José de la Llave claimed ownership of all present day Burleson Township and its Permanent settlement area from President Taylor for $5 per acre (US$ ). This included most of modern San Antonio County including much of today's downtown core. The first house in town was built by James Aiken about 1836 on what is now Main Street which still stands today as part of downtown San Antonio. By 1839 there were three stores, one hotel and twelve homes with a population of 150 people or less In 1840 George Armstrong Custer invaded Mexico and took possession of Bexar County including parts of San Antonio County as well as some areas located to the north such as Refugio del Valle near Fredericksburg). This event changed forever how locals viewed themselves because it raised public awareness about war and property rights issues between Mexicans living south of our border while Americans lived north On November 25th 1840 General John Fetterman came overland from Missouri with his brigade under General Zachary Taylor to help crush Robert E Lee's Confederate army at Appomattox Court House Virginia where Confederate General Joseph Johnston surrendered his army without battle A post office called "Bexar" was established in May 1861 by orderof Colonel William Hurlbut with mail run between New Braunfels and Bexar only . On October 15th 1861 postmaster Isaac Miller opened an office at 4th & Market Streets having moved from Adobe Walls which had been destroyed in an earthquake two months earlier Burleson became a town on January 14th 1865 when it split from Ruidoso Township . On February 11th 1865 Mayor David Widenius appointed Jno Matson mayor pro tem replacing Absalom Norris who resigned due to ill health

The first post office in Burleson was established on February 14, 1872, and opened to serve the village of Mayaca Apache. The town grew slowly until it had a population of about 500 people by 1903. The discovery of oil rigs in 1901 led to increased development around Burleson and its surrounding countryside; during the early years of this boomtown's existence, businesses included gas stations, flour mills and various other enterprises. In 1941, General Motors built a plant here for their Buick plants; this produced some unusual products for GM such as "Cimarron" pickups which were made with carbon-fiber bodywork instead of steel or aluminum due to wartime shortages of both materials and labor. However, following World War IIGM abandoned most operations in Burleson as production shifted towards new plants throughout the Midwest due to postwar competition from imports fostered by Allied victory over Nazi Germany
