The history of the Air Force in Cedar Park, Texas dates back to World War II when the United States Air Force was established. During that time, Cedar Park became a hub for aircraft production and service. The first Boeing A-17H Flying Fortress bombers arrived in Cedar Park on July 15, 1942. The city’s role in the war continued through 1945 with Operation Crossroads which saw military planes flown into Mexico City to drop supplies to General Franco’s forces. On September 12, 1945, the last Boeing A-17H bomber departed from Cedar Park and flew into San Antonio Airport. At this point, Cedar Park had become home to more than 100 Aircraft Production and Service Facilities as well as ninety-six Aircraft Maintenance and Repair Units (AMRUs). Still today, Air Force personnel are stationed at several of these facilities including Wright-Patterson AFB where they maintain fighter jets and control air traffic; Armstrong McLeod AFB where they operate helicopters; Hill Army Air Field in central Texas where they field artillery pieces; and Kirtland AFB outside Albuquerque where they conduct research and development for new weapons systems. Cedar Park, Texas is a small town located in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 9,813 at the 2010 census. Cedar Park is home to Cedar Park High School and Elmwood Baptist Church which are both among the oldest churches in Texas. The name "Cedar Park" comes from a Creek word meaning "parts of the woods". The first settlers in what is now Cedar Park were farmers who arrived around 1836. By 1839, Gillett had built a log cabin on his farmstead which became known as Cedar Grove. A post office was established at Cedar Grove in 1841, and by 1850 it had become known as Cedar Park. In 1886, local citizens bought 8 acres (3 km²) of land for $1,000 from David Whitehead and erected a gristmill on that parcel of land which became known as White Hall Mill. The mill continued operations until 1907 when it was destroyed by fire. In 1902, John Wahlstrom donated an acre (0.6 km²) of land to be used as a parkland near his home on Maple Lane where he later constructed Elmwood Baptist Church and called it Elmwood HeightsPark. The park opened to the public in 1904 and has been maintained ever since by Mrs. Wahlstrom with help from her son-in-law Harry Buehler Jr.. In 1954, an addition to Elmwood Baptist Church allowed for seating for over 200 people and this made it one of the largest churches in Texas at that time; however, due to budget cuts initiated by then-Governor Herman Cain during his administration, Elmwood Baptist Church closed its doors for good in 2006 amidst protests from its congregation over funding issues.). In 1973–1974 local citizens collected money through raffles to purchase 640 acres (256 hectares), located south of present day Cedar Park along I-35W., between Houston and Dallas counties for use as agricultural farmland; this parcel became known as Beltway Country Farms (). Beltway Country Farms remains in private hands today with permission from original owners only allowing visits by members of invited families with proper identification cards or family photo IDrs.; access is currently restricted due to damage caused by Hurricane Harvey
