Cedar Park is a small town in Wood County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2000 census. Cedar Park is part of the Houston–The Woodlands Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Cedar Park comes from a post office located there and its original plan called for it to be named after "the cedar trees that grow near our creek." The first settlers in what would become Cedar Park arrived in 1836 and established the first permanent settler's cabin on the present-day corner of Clearwater Road and Prairie Avenue. Kirby's store functioned as a stop for passengers traveling between Houston and Beaumont through Wood County. He also sold goods direct to travelers on his stages. In 1857, James Ransom erected a log courthouse in what is now downtown Cedar Park which served as the county seat until 1871 when Galveston was selected as the new county seat due to its growing population and lack of space within Wood County limits. After Galveston became the county seat, business activity shifted away from Cedar Park towards Galveston proper; however, many small businesses continued to operate in nearby Humble (then unincorporated) until 1949 when Humble incorporation made them all part of cityHouston proper.
