The Conroe Army Base was the first military installation in Texas. The base was established on July 10, 1898, when General John J. Pershing ordered the creation of an army post in Brownsville. The post was named Fort Rice and it served as a garrison for three years before being relocated to its current location on May 30, 1902. In 1917, the base became the site of World War I training exercises for American soldiers from Texas. After World War I ended, Fort Rice was used as a barracks for active duty troops until 1959, when it became the home of Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC) of the 2nd Infantry Division during the Vietnam War era. During that time period, HHC earned multiple awards including two Presidential Unit Citations and five campaign medals with stars. On September 14th, 1992, HHC moved permanently to Conroe and became Headquarters Company (HCo), 1st Battalion (Lahti), 9th Infantry Regiment (I/9). Conroe is a city in Texas, United States. The population was 20,604 at the 2010 census. It is the seventh-largest city in Texas and the fifth-largest city in the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. It is located on the banks of Buffalo Bayou. The name Conroe comes from two Wichita Comanche words - "kon" meaning 'place' and "roe" meaning 'hollow'. The first European to visit Conroe was named John Bourgues by Captain Pierre Le Moyne de La Salle on November 28, 1795 while exploring what is now eastern Louisiana. Bourgues named a small creek and some prominent hills after French explorer Louis Hébert who had passed through that area earlier that year. On April 4, 1836, James Kenedy founded what would become Conroe with land he purchased from Bourgues. Kenedy was one of America's earliest entrepreneurs and built several businesses including cotton gin, tannery and cattle ranching before becoming an investor in railroads which helped spur economic development within Conroe over time In 1881, Alfred Pecos County was created from most of present day Houston County when it was annexed by Houston On December 3rd 1907 during World War I General MacArthur arrived in Conroe to sign peace treaties with Mexico City as part of his punitive campaign against Aguinaldo's forces following Mexican Revolution

The Fourth of July celebration in Conroe features large fireworks displays over downtown while numerous concerts are held throughout the week throughout different music venues around town including Moody Coliseum amphitheater which seats up to 25,000 people for events like concerts by country artist Tim McGraw or rock bands like Metallica or Staind during summer shows at Midtown Stadium located on FM 1960 just east of I-10 exit 181B near Loop 610 & US 59A
Conroe was founded in 1872 by a group of pioneers who came from Texas and Mexico. The town quickly grew, becoming the largest in Texas and one of the most important localities in American history. It was also a major center for cotton production, with many factories and mills located within its boundaries.
