The National Guard in Conroe, Texas has a long history of providing service to the community. The first unit organized in Conroe was the 7th Regiment of Texas Infantry on September 12, 1827. This regiment was part of the Mexican-American War and served under General Antonio López de Santa Anna. On July 9, 1861, at 2:00pm local time, Confederate troops attacked Fort Worth from two sides with little warning. A total of 54 Texans were killed and more than 120 were wounded in this attack. As a result of this attack, the state of Texas declared martial law and ordered all militia units to report to their barracks within 24 hours or be disbanded. On October 25, 1861, after Mexican-American War victory over Texan forces at Monterrey Field near San Antonio, Gov. James Killearn called for an emergency meeting of the State Legislature to discuss what should be done next with regard to the national guard that had been mobilized successfully during these earlier hostilities. It was decided that one regiment would stay in Austin while another regiment would move eastward into Bowie County; both regiments would remain active until December 1st when they were mustered out under military occupation by President Abraham Lincoln as part as part of his Reconstruction Plan for America which aimed to terminate slavery throughout most of America following its defeat during the Civil War. Conroe is a small town in Houston County, Texas, United States. The population was 4,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area. Conroe's nickname "The Friendly City" comes from its long history of cooperation and friendship with neighboringHouston. The first settler in what is now Conroe was C.D. Cook in 1853. Cook built a log cabin on his property which still stands today as the home of the Cook Museum. In 1860, John Kirby purchased land east of present day Conroe from Elisha Radcliffe for $1400 dollars and started to build a house on it known as Kirby’s Cabin No 1. As construction progressed, Kirby increased his holdings until he had two large cabins – one on each side of an open square mile (0.6 km²) that he called “Kirby Ranch” today’s intersection of IH-45 and FM 19608/UPRR 20 miles (32 km²). Today that intersection is known as McCulloch Street near downtown Conroe; before Kirby bought it he named it Main Street because he felt that it would be more convenient for those living around him to know where they were located without having to ask anyone twice about their street name! In 1876 Humble Oil & Refining Co., predecessor to Texaco Incorporated filed suit against John Kirby for trademark infringement over the word "conoco" which at that time stood for "Cotton Oil." The matter went to arbitration but no settlement could be reached so Humble Oil & Refining Company brought suit again in 1879 claiming unfair competition over supplies of gasoline from John Kirby's companyTexaco Incorporated - this time they won! This case led directly to legislation enacted by Congress in 1890 giving oil companies exclusive rights to produce gas within fifty miles (80 km²) of their production sites! This law remains in place to this day and allows resources such as asphalt, cement and other materials used by businesses all across Harris County not only to be processed here but also sold off locally at below market prices!. It wasn't until 1901 when Orville Freeman opened up Hume Farms Dairy just south of today's Interstate 45 junction with FM 19608/UPRR that things really began getting good for Conroe residents with regards grocery shopping - back then there was no Interstates 45 or 95 so drivers hadTo meander through rural areas on UPRRs during rush hour looking for groceries was like trying To find your way out alive after being lost inside a citylimits map! According to some estimates water lines ran right along every road leading into town from farms westward making fetching cups of water much easier than ever before!. By 1950virtually all main streets were paved with asphalt making life much easier for everyone who lived here including farmers who got rid of their wagons fullOf hay just outside our door!, Although we do have one closed down stretch OF US Highway 90 where pavement has been replaced by metal detecting equipment due TO THE EXPANSION OF DART TRAFFIC IN CONROE recent years!! That said though even WITH ALL THE BARRIERS CONROE STILL REMAINS ONE OF THE FRIENDLY CITYS YOU WILL VISIT WHEN IN HOUSTON !!
