Corsicana was named after Captain John Fenton Corsican who had helped to found Corpus Christi, Texas in 1835. In 1849, it became the capital of Texas and also served as the seat for government until Austin's incorporation into statehood in 1907. The cotton gin industry played an important role in Corsicana's development and there are still many extant cotton plantations around town. The area now known as downtown Corsicana was first developed during the late 1800s when several large businesses were built along Railroad Avenue including Jardine & Mathews cigar store, Swift & Company dry goods store, Pemberton Mercantile Co., Wickershire Hotel and two banks: First National Bank and Citizens National Bank. In 1907, the city was annexed into Austin, which created more opportunities for economic growth within Corsicana thanks to its location within one municipality. However, cotton production continued to play an important role within the city until about 1970 when it began to decline due to changing trends in American agriculture. Today, downtown Corsicana is home to several restaurants, bars and nightlife options as well as a number of museums related to its history or local products such as Fiesta de la Raza (a Hispanic Festival) which takes place each year on October 10th throughout downtown streetside areas close to IMAX theaters etcetera
