The national guard in Crowley, Texas has been a part of the community for over 100 years. The unit was formed on November 5th, 1923 as the City of Crowley Volunteer Fire Department. It was later renamed the National Guard and currently serves as an arm of the local government. When World War I started, many men from Crowley volunteered to serve in the military. The first line of defense for Crowley was the volunteer fire department. After World War I ended, many men decided to stay in Crowley and form their own businesses or join army or navy service. This led to the formation of various organizations within Crowley including the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (1925), American Legion Post No. 1 (1927), First Presbyterian Church (1929), Masonic Lodge #5 (October 1933), National Guard Armory Building Committee (March 1935) and National Guard Armory Committee (May 1936). In 1938, when statehood became available to Texas, citizens voted overwhelmingly in favor of becoming a state within United States borders. On November 3rd, 1938, Governor A.J. Musto announced that members of city's volunteer fire department would become members of state militia when they were sworn into office by Governor Price Van Zandt on December 1st at 10am CST as part of requirements for being a part of state government under new laws passed by Congress following passage through two different sessions without Republican control in both Houses due to party splits within GOP factions during Franklin D Roosevelt’s first term as President – one with New Deal liberalism while other had more conservative leanings typified by “Bull Moose” Theodore Roosevelt’s entry into office which eventually led to increased politicization/centralization/dissolution/division within GOP structure across nation during second term leading up to outbreak World War II beginning January 1941 with formal declaration by President Roosevelt July 24th 1941 that all uniformed services must report at ArmyHQ at Fort Sam Houston so activated units could be placed under Secretary Stimson’s command which effectively activated allNational Guards elements nationwide effective September 16th 1941″(Clayton Wiltz) On August 9th 1941 Captain James Moseley relieved Lieutenant Colonel John Fenton as commander and Assistant Chief Marshal Joe Tague took command effective October 8th 1941(Gerald Jelinek). Commander First Lieutenant Algernon Ladd assumed command on October 15th 1941 until relieved by Captain Moseley on November 2nd 1942 after sexual misconduct charges against him were brought against him.(Clayton Wiltz) Captain Algernon Ladd relinquished his command effective February 25th 1943 after being convicted on perjury charges relating to Testimony he gave before grand jury about arms sales made between source organization &PDW during investigation into weapons procurement irregularities& cover-up activity related thereto.(Eugene Newman)

On September 11, 1959, the 1st Cavalry Regiment became a unit of the Texas Army National Guard when it was activated as an infantry brigade at San Antonio Army Medical Center under command of Major General Edwin A. Crowley, Texas is located in Angelina County, about 25 miles southeast of Dallas and about 120 miles northwest of Houston. The town was founded in 1878 by James Crowley and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The first store opened in 1880. In 1886, the community erected its first courthouse. Crowley has a population of approximately 20,000 residents today. The town began to prosper as a result of its location on the banks of the Trinity River. A foundry was established here in 1892 and enlargement occurred until 1907 when an express train derailed near Crowley and destroyed much property. The town again flourished during World War I with production at a munitions plant and business interests such as a gas station, bakery, post office and bank developing along Railroad Avenue. However, following World War II things changed for Crowley with declines in industry and population followed by increases in crime rates from areas around Dallas and Houston which led to economic decline that persists to this day.
