Ennis, Texas is a small town located in northwest Texas. The population was 9,751 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of McAllen County. Ennis was founded on July 3, 1879, by men from Nacogdoches and Galveston who took over an abandoned ranch. The town grew rapidly and by 1886 had a population of 20 people. In 1912, Ennis became the first municipality in McAllen County when it incorporated as a city. The city experienced rapid growth during World War II with the influx of servicemen and their families. The war left Ennis with a large military presence which continues to this day. After the war ended, the city began to decline and its population decreased to 5,611 in 2000. According to the 2010 census, there are now only 4,559 residents living in Ennis proper (including 2imaras), while 1,651 live within a radius of 5 miles of the center of town (the "inner ring"). The history of Ennis goes back much further than that which can be found on local Memory Lane or on local historical websites. One such source is oral history taken from local residents during various interviews conducted over many years ago by Drs./Msgrs., Laura Lagerquist and Donny Schaffer-Danielson; both retired educators from Our Lady’s School District 204 in nearby Ciudad Juárez . Oral history has never been published before but we believe that it would be valuable for students interested in exploring our community’s rich heritage as well as gaining insights into our own personal past . It was not until after World War II that enis started experiencing sustained growth due to new business ventures brought about by American soldiers stationed hereabouts . This boom continued through most of the Korean War era but petered out thereafter as unit deployments came home . Withdrawn GI's & their families gradually replaced departing citizens during this time period - leaving behind lasting legacy's including Stoned Hill Casino Resort throghout 1990s (& beyond) ..... A recent addition to Heritage Trail points out one contributing factor: Economic Development! When General Motors closed its plant south of town around 1990 they laid off approximately 60% of employees--a major impact on economic stability throughout much OF US !! ...... In more recent times things have generally been going down hill ..... although some might say that things have finally caught up with us recently due to draconian budget cuts ..... .... Although we're still trying hard fight like always!
