Freeport is located on the Brazos River and has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. The city started as a stop on the Santa Fe Trail in 1836 when John Crain built his first store there. In 1857, James Hogg founded an early cotton gin here that became one of the largest employers in Freeport until it closed its doors in 1915. The cotton industry ended almost completely in Freeport by World War II due to decreased demand for cotton after the war. However, the city continues to produce soybeans and wheat for local consumption and exported these crops until around 2000. In 2000, authorities discovered an oil field off of Freeport's coast which led to a boom in business for businesses within town limits such as shipping companies and leasing agents who leased land from drilling rigs situated offshore while still using Freeport's Port Authority for access to water supplies and other amenities necessary for their operations (e.g., restaurants).
