The Coast Guard gift history dates back to 1892 when a group of men from the New York Life Insurance Company donated two boats, one for use as a patrol boat and the other for use as a lifesaving vessel. The first Coast Guard Cutter was built in 1915 and was named in honor of Commodore John A. Halsey who led the United States Atlantic Fleet during World War I. In 1916, the Coast Guard bought its second Cutter, which became known as USCGC Sweetwater. The first Women’s Auxiliary Force (WAF) was established in 1935 and WAF Cutter USS Polly was commissioned in 1938. In 1941, the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) began offering classes to become certified seamen and on July 1, 1951, USCG purchased USMMA’s first ship – USCGC Godfrey L. Smith (AV-4). On December 5, 1954, the first cutter made available for hire by the Coast Guard Auxiliary – CGRS(L) Peggy Ann contributed by Gift from Mrs. Alvah Mclntyre of Wilmington DE In 1957–1959 two more vessels were donated: CGRS(C)(HMSO 4) Elizabethtown and CGRS(K)(HMSO 9). These vessels were used primarily for search and rescue operations off coast of Maine but also served as classrooms at USMMA until their retirement in 1984. The following year saw the addition of six more craft - CGRS(L)(HMSO 11-14), CGRS(K)(HMSO 16-18), CGRS(P)(HMSO 20), USCGC George Washington (CG-8), USCGC John F Kennedy (CG-9) On December 3rd 1970 new donation came through when USS Hyannis Port contributed her services with her cargo of gifts including five corvettes - HMCS Protecteur (QF2/D3), HMCS Hannibalicetus (QF1/D5), HMCS Regina (QF1/D6), HMCS Sunfish II (QF2/D7) On February 19th 1974 an additional four vessels were donated - USCGC Enterprise Bayou , NOAA Ship Comfort Harbor , SS Jeremiah O’Brien & SS Lucky Star .
