The United States Armed Forces have a rich history dating back to the beginning of the Republic. One of the earliest military forces in the country was the Army, which was established on April 26, 1775. The Army grew rapidly during the Revolutionary War, and by 1781 had reached a size of over 50,000 men. During and after the Revolution, there were many attempts by Congress to establish an army large enough to help prosecute hostilities against Great Britain. None of these efforts became actual law until 1799 when Congress passed an act that created a standing army for Texas. At this time, Texan militias were still in place and could not be called into service without their own levy money and equipment. On July 1, 1836, Texas became a state and its militia was increased from 3,500 men to 10,000 men under command of Major General James Fenton. This force served throughout Mexican American War (1846-48) as part of General Antonio López de Santa Anna’s Mexican FederalArmy corps. In 1849 Congress passed an act authorizingthe organization of an artillery regiment in each state within three years; this regiment would serve as part of army artillery units during Indian Wars (1851-65). Grand Prairie is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 105,827 at the 2010 census. Grand Prairie is the sixth largest city in Texas and the twelfth largest city in the United States. It is part of a metropolitan area that includes Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston-The Woodlands. The first people to live on what is now Grand Prairie were two groups of Cherokee Indians who had been living there for some time before European settlement began. The first permanent white person to live on what is now Grand Prairie was John C. Frémont, Jr., who arrived in 1836 as an American explorer and surveyor. He named the area "Granger" after his father, John C. Frémont Sr.. In 1839, Grangers James Bowie and William Hogg set up a market near where 3rd Street meets Interstate 10 today; this became known as Bowie's Station. In 1845, Mexican soldiers killed four prominent Grangers: Bowie, Hogg, Jim Bowie (brother of John C.), and Davy Crockett (a lawyer). This event led to Anglo settlers coming overland from Independent Mexico to start their own farm communities in what would become Midland County - many of which still exist today such as Richardson Rancho Grande de Tejas (now Arlington) or Denton Rancho Seco del Rio Grande (now Grapevine). Archer Holdings Company was founded by Sam Rayburn in 1922 as one of the original large oil companies within Texaco Incorporated (); it merged with ExxonMobil Corporation in 2006 (). Many ranchers also built homes around here during this time including Dockstader ranchos such as Slaughtering Hills subdivision located just east of I-10 exit 213A off I-35W/Utopia Parkway (). Reynoldson Avenue (), renamed Garland Highway following its incorporation into Texaco Incorporated (), runs concurrent with Utopia Parkway between downtown Fort Worth and eastern Richardson Rancho Grande de Tejas until it intersects I-635 south of present day Ballpark Drive () just north of Utopia Parkway Boulevard (). East side streets running parallel to Utopia Parkway Boulevard include Elmwood Avenue (), Maple Avenue (), Science Park Boulevard (), Waco Road () & Dripping Springs Road (). These streets are now business corridors serving industryally based businesses that have relocated across town since Texaco pulled out fromTexaco One but remain culturally significant to those areas they served once within walking distance from home (). By 1870 there were over 1 hundred residents living on what would become Grand Prairie proper; most likely due to early settler expansion into dry farming country southwest of Wichita Falls that year along Interstate 40A when the US acquiredTX 16 from Mexico under Treaty #1 ()
