Grand Prairie is a city in Texas, United States. The population was 97,711 at the 2010 census. Grand Prairie is the fourth-largest city in Texas and the 11th-largest city in the United States. It is also the most populous town in Dallas County. By 1840, Englishman David Lowry had erected a log cabin on this site and called it "Grand Rapids". Lowry operated a sawmill and gristmill here until his death in 1865 due to a wool fever pandemic which swept across Europe at that time; he never returned to live in Canada.[1] In 1872, three men – J.D Denton Jr., Wm Ewart Smith and Charles Goodnight – laid out what would become downtown Grand Rapids with plans to create an artificial lake fronting rapids on Red River so that rafting could be enjoyed downstream from their new town center. However, when engineers designed the original street grid for what would become Downtown Grand Rapids they ignored river obstacles near where Red River empties into Houston Bayou (later renamed I-35W).
