Grand Prairie is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 85,887 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Midland County. Grand Prairie is located on the Red River in East Texas. The first people to live in what is now Grand Prairie were the Caddo Indian tribe. The town was founded by James Robertson in 1875 as a trading post on the Red River between Dallas and Fort Worth. In 1881, Grand Prairie became an incorporated town with a population of just over 100 people. In 1907, General George Smedley established Camp Bowie northwest of central Grand Prairie as a base for American forces during World War I and II. When Camp Bowie closed in 1945, thousands of soldiers and their families living nearby moved into new homes built near present-day downtown Grand Prairie when that area was annexed by the city limits of Grand Praire in 1949. When Interstate 35W was constructed through Midland County in 1966, it bypassed much of downtown Grand praire and its commercial district including many large housing developments dating from that period such as Park Place and Will Rogers Center which are still around today although they have been remodeled several times since their original construction. As a result of this bypassing, most downtown businesses closed down or relocated while many small businesses continued to operate within walking distance of Interstate 35W but without any access to outside commerce or services (except for occasional truck traffic). Downtown business owners lobbied hard for plans which would reroute I-35W so that it would run through downtown instead connecting all four corners of the city creating one massive street grid with major shopping areas at each corner along with public transportation options available directly from both interstates; however these plans never came to fruition due to funding issues unique to that time and place However things began to change after Mayor Donny Young announced his Plan To rebuild Downtown using Public Money & Private Funds Combined $10M From Uptown Development Limited Partnership - This plan called For A One Block Width Driveway On Main Street Between Baylor Road And Lamar Hunt Parkway Which Would Have Included A Subway Station & Other Retail Storefronts And Would Have Created A New Neighborhood Called “Downtown†With Its Own Police Department & Waterfront Zone Dedicated To All types Of Recreational Activities Which Could Include Fishing, Boating, swimming etc... After Months Of Backlash From Businesses Who Said They Wouldn’t Be Affected If It Didn’t Happen And People Started retweeting #DowntownGrandPraire After seeing How Many Students Were Living In Their Local School Districts Just North Of The freeway And How Great It Would Be To Have Some sort Of Open Market Where You Can Buy Anything You Want NearBYdowntownAnd Interstates 35w & 90

Grand Prairie, Texas is a small town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Midland–Edinburg-Perez City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town began as an agricultural community and was founded in 1881 by brothers John and James Ladd. The Ladd brothers were also the first settlers to homestead in what is now Grand Prairie. By 1907, Grand Prairie had a post office and two churches: First Baptist (founded in 1892) and Methodist (founded in 1903). In 1916, Grand Prairie became the seat of Hidalgo County after it was annexed by the county from Comanche County. As a result of its location on the Trinity River Valley between Kansas City, Missouri and Austin, Texas – which made it convenient for shipping oil products from Houston – Grand Prairie became one of the most important oilfield towns in Texas during World War I.
