Harlingen, Texas is a town located in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Monterrey metropolitan area. The name Harlingen comes from a mission that was established there in 1847 by Father José Antonio Dominguez and Brother Francisco Javier Lara. The town was founded on November 15, 1879, by Manuel González and his family after they migrated from Puebla, Mexico. On May 11, 1880, Harlingen became a municipality with its own government and school system. The first post office opened in Harlingen on December 5, 1880. The community sprang up around the railroad station which had been constructed to serve as a trading post between Chihuahua and Veracruz. By 1901, when the rail line was abandoned and replaced by an interstate highway system, most of what is now Harlingen had been developed; only a few small rural parcels remained unincorporated until after World War II when they were annexed into new municipalities or incorporated as towns within municipal boundaries. In 1951-1952 two-thirds of all businesses in town were closed due to lack of customers during the McCarthy witch hunt hysteria led by Ulysses S Grant's Attorney General Aversford Devine; this resulted in many residents moving out of town over fear for their safety should they be targeted for prosecution or Inquisition proceedings because such businesses would have been considered "political" activities (at that time it was not against federal law to engage in commerce). Afterward most businesses reopened but some smaller ones did not due to difficulties obtaining re-licenses or permits from new municipal administrations (e.g., Western Airlines) while other larger businesses moved away altogether because they could no longer compete with newer companies founded after the end of McCarthyism (e.g., ExxonMobil). In 1969, when Lyndon B Johnson became president he ordered a study done on how best to integrate Hispanics into American society which led to passage of legislation called bilingual education Act 1970 which attempted to provide bilingual education services statewide for children aged 6 through 16 years old throughout Texas regardless of parents' native language skills/ilingual ability/backgrounds even if those kids grew up without formal schooling outside Texas (the exception being charter schools which received Title I funding under affirmative action laws). As part of this program bilingual education materials were provided free OFFLINE to Mexican Americans who lived in northernmost states who also attended these public schools while their children went back home to poor families across state lines where private Mexican American families received similar educational opportunities WITHOUT charge! This same program continue until 1996 when newly elected Republican governor George W Bush repealed all bilingual education programs statewide effective January 1st 1997 effective only within city limits! This left behind approximately one million Mexican Americans who still do not have access either TO SCHOOL OR TRANSLATION SERVICES!!! All these years later we are still waiting for our voice!

However, over time some changes began to occur within the community; most importantly, alcohol became widely available withinHarlingen proper starting in the late 1940s. This led to many social problems which continue to this day; for example, several high-profile arrests have been made related to alcohol consumption or drug use withinHarlendingen society. Today, Harlingen is a small but thriving community that continues to enjoy significant popularity among its residents and visitors alike due to its rich history and vibrant culture. Due primarily to its location on Highway 183 between Austin and Dallas – just east of downtown –Harlendingen has played an important role both as a commercial center for southeastern Texas and as a tourist destination throughout Greater Dallas/Fort Worth area.

The museum features exhibits on local history, including artifacts and photographs from the early years of town development and ranching.
