The National Guard in Henderson, Texas has been a part of the community since before there were any communities in Henderson. The first unit to be activated in Henderson was the 6th Cavalry Regiment on November 9, 1892. The regiment was organized from militia units that had served in Arizona and New Mexico during the Mexican-American War. The National Guard has played an important role in the history of Henderson since its inception. It has provided law enforcement and security for local events as well as providing support to local military installations. In addition, the National Guard has been used as a training ground for new officers and soldiers. Today, the Henderson Municipal Police Department (HMPD) relies heavily on the National Guard to provide patrol services and emergency services. HMPD also uses national guard troops to supplement their current force when needed. In addition, many businesses within the town have contracted with the Guard to provide security at various functions such as meetings and business tradeshows. Many people in Henderson remember how grateful they are that we have access to our national guard troops through HMPD. The Guardsmen have always been willing and available to help out when needed, whether it is during large or small events. The Henderson National Guard was organized on November 12, 1924. The first national guard unit in the area was Company C of the 9th Texas Infantry, which arrived in Fort Worth from Corpus Christi on December 1, 1924. Company C served with distinction during World War II and the Korean War before being disbanded in 1957. In 1961, the 10th Texas Infantry was activated and stationed at Fort Worth Airport until it consolidated with Company A of the 2nd Battalion (7th Marines) in 1975. In 1978, a brigade sized unit was activated and deployed to Beirut, Lebanon as part of Operation Neptune’s Spear to support United States Marine Corps ground forces fighting Hezbollah militants. In 1992-1993, a battalion size unit served as part of Task Force Westland while stationed at Fort Hood outside Dallas. In 2002-2003 a brigade sized unit mobilized for Operation Noble Eagle following the September 11 terrorist attacks. After deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan in 2008-2009 A Squadron (2nd Battalion/1st Cavalry) became an all volunteer squadron responsible for providing security for Umpqua County events such as rodeos and fairs within 100 miles of Portland Oregon

In 1812, President James K. Polk signed legislation setting up a system whereby citizens could enlist in state militias for three years without having to serve in the military. This gave rise to several different types of militias- local militia (state militias were renamed Regular Army after Confederation), national guard (national guard units were organized into brigades or regiments), ranger corps (rangers became full time officers after 1830), and volunteer infantry (Volunteer Infantry Units were formed between 1861 and 1865). The first unit ever raised in the United States was Company D of Rhode Island’s 1st Regiment Armory Volunteer Infantry on November 3rd, 1861. National Guard units served in all three branches of the U.S. military- Union Army, Confederate Army, and American Civil War- from 1861 until 1865. Militia service also saw significant duty outside of America during World War I; troops from New York State killed more Germans than any other state combined while serving in Europe as part of Allied Forces under General John Joffre’s command at Caporetto Ridge near Asiago Pass Italy on October 25th 1915] A total of 54 Medals Of Honor were awarded to members ofthe National Guard throughout World War I]. After World War I there was a boom in National Guard donations with over two million men being enlisted between 1919 and 1924]. Henderson, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Henderson first became a municipality on November 3, 1881. The post office was established in 1887 and closed in 1961. Henderson is named for Major General David Henderson who fought against Mexican forces during the American Revolution. Henderson was once one of the leading cotton plantations in Texas and had a railroad line running through it. In 1907, President William McKinley designated Henderson as the county seat of Hudspeth County. The state of Texas purchased the property from the Hudspeth family for $5,000 in 1911 and renamed it Richardson AFB after General Richardson who served during World War I as Commanding Officer of American ForcesMexico City Area. After World War II, Henderson experienced rapid growth with new development such as an oil refinery and shopping malls built around its downtown area. However, by 2000-2001, economic decline began to take hold due to factors such as joblessness and recent recessionary trends throughout Texas which led to a decrease in housing prices within Henderson itself as well as other nearby towns. By 2011-2012, there were only about 100 residents living in Henderson while most of its downtown buildings were vacant or used for storage or agriculture purposes; however some preservation efforts have been made to try and save these buildings from demolition altogether In 2009-2010, local activists working towards creating an arts center in downtown started organizing events such as art walks around town which attracted artists from all over; however this initiative ultimately failed due to lack of funding In addition to its many cultural attractions including an opera house/theater complex that opened up in 2006 after years of planning by local leaders and donations from individuals and foundations alike; Henderson also has several sporting events that occur each year including the annual rodeo held at Richardson AFB which attracts hundreds of spectators The city has also been home to several professional athletes including NFL players Deion Sanders (a cornerback for Houston Oilers) and Ricky Williams (a running back for Dallas Cowboys) among others
