Henderson was founded in 1871 by Captain John A. Henderson and his wife Mary C. Jackson as a small farming community near the present day town of Round Rock. The post office which opened in 1872 served the community until it was discontinued in 1951. In 1917, James Fenton Henderson donated land to the city of Round Rock for $5,000 dollars to be used as a public park and shopping center. The first phase of this project was completed within two years and included the construction of a central business district with an acres of commercial space on First Street near I-35W. Phase Two began in 1953 and added new blocks to the downtown area including additional retail spaces, office buildings, and apartments overlooking Second Street. Today Phase Three continues with expansions that include new parks (Henderson Lakefront Park & Southpark), new medical facilities (The University Hospital – now known as Baylor Scott Hospital), and a major renovation of State Capitol Building that has created more than 350 jobs since 2007
Henderson was founded in 1853 by Capt. J.W. Henderson and his wife, Eliza. The town was named after Capt. Henderson's home state of Texas, which he had recently landed in on a ship from New Orleans. Henderson became a post office in 1855 and a county seat in 1865. In 1907, the town incorporations were changed to townships and the name reverted to Henderson when all but one township merged into Johnson County in 1961.
