The store was founded by John Fenton and his wife, Jennie. The store was located on the corner of Elm and Buchanan Streets. Hargrave started a grocery store on Payne Street near Elm Street. This grocerystore was one of the first in town and it served as the starting point for many local businesses that followed suit over the years. Over time,Captain Hargrave's grocerystore developed into an extensive candy and snacks operation which helped make Hereford a popular tourist destination during those days. Another early business in town was the post office which was established in 1879 by Jno Bigham Jr.. The post office operated until it closed its doors in 1911 due to lack of patronage. At that time, Hereford had only two residents- John Fenton and Bennie Green- so there wasn't much need for a postal service! The first settlers in Hereford were German immigrants who came to this area in 1836. They built a log cabin on the banks of the Brazos River and named their town after Hereford, England. In 1846, Hereford was combined with neighboring school towns of Joplin and Dumas to form a new county called Midland County. The original county courthouse was located in Hereford and remains operational today as the Old Courthouse Museum. In 1907, here was born Harry Hines Fenton who would become one of America's most famous automobile manufacturers- Hennessey & Company. He started out making radios foramine companies like General Electric and Westinghouse until he founded his own company in 1917 which became Ford Motor Company. In 1922, he married Alice Swope (1892-1976). They would move to Dearborn Michigan where they enjoyed many years leading large corporations before moving back to Texas in 1969 when Ford merged with Chevrolet which made them once again one company- this time under one name-Ford Motors Corporation! After more than 50 years of leadership at Ford Motor Company here they retired in 1993 following a long era of success that included many world records including being first ever American car manufacturer to sell 1 million cars! Hereford is a small town in McKinney County, Texas, United States. The population was 496 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. The first settler in Hereford Township was John Hargrave and his family in 1851. The name Hereford was chosen because it sounded like a place where cavalry could encamp for rest and practice before battle. In 1875, Hereford post office opened, and the first shipment of mail from here arrived on October 7th of that year. In 1902, Hereford voters approved the erection of a schoolhouse to serve as a community center for their township. The cornerstone for this building was laid on December 12th of that year by Mrs. Cletus Fenton (the wife of Jens Hansen). A new school opened its doors on September 30th, 1903 under Superintendent Wm S Dunnigan with the assistance of Mrs. Fenton and Mr. Harry Weimer. The years 1925-1926 were difficult for Hereford as Marshall Field purchased land adjacent to here and began operations at nearby Plano which destroyed much what had been built thereabouts in 1923-24 when he initiated a program to clear all forested areas within Plano city limits to make way for his new mall developments including an environs acreage valued at $30 million dollars! Today’s replica mall would have been impossible without this destructive development but thankfully no lives were lost or homes destroyed; however, many trees were cut down leaving behind an ugly shroud over what used to be one very pleasant townscape! In 1955, When This Area Became Redeveloped by Baylor University their football stadium became home field for Men’s Club Football which continued until 1984 when they moved up to Rice Stadium which is now known as AT&T Stadium
