In 1898, gun owner and store proprietor Sam Bass sold his business to Prentice Ladd for $5,000. That same year saw the birth of the first rifle range in town- it was called “The ranges†and was located on what is now UTEP campus. Rifle shooting was a popular pastime in those days so The Ranges became one of Highland’s most important landmarks. In 1903, gunsmith Simeon Day founded the “Day Gun Workshops†at 418 W Main Street to provide handgun manufacturing services to area businesses and individuals. Mr. Day would continue to run this business until his death in 1957. In 1929, local resident Hoot Shearer purchased land adjacent to The Ranges which he used as his personal pistol range (now known as Shearer Range). This gave rise to another important landmark within the community- Shearer Range became home turf for many future rifle shooters including legendary Bud Foster Sr., Don Pratt and Jerry Lee Arrington among others! Additionally, many high-ranking American officials lived in or visited Highlands during this time period including Adm Richard Byrd Jr., Gen Douglas MacArthur Jr., Gen Leslie Riggs (headquarters photographer at Pearl Harbor), LtGen John Lattimore (chief engineer at Fort Worth Army Air Base) and more! Today, Highlander continues to experience significant growth due both to its current population size (~6,000 residents) as well as its unique history which includes being home to several famous people including Willie Nelson (of rock band Willie Nelson & Friends fame), Dr Pepper CEO Roberto Calderón de la Hoya and numerous other local dignitaries!
