The Texas Air National Guard (TANG) was officially activated on October 15, 1947 by then-Governor Lyman Trumbull. The ANG was originally composed of the 113th Fighter Wing and the 146th Bombardment Squadron. The activation of the 1st Tactical Fighter Command established a cadre for fighter training, which eventually led to the creation of the 108th Fighter Wing in 1951. On April 25, 1958, TANG became an operational wing with three squadrons when it was redesignated as 1st Fighter Division (Air Defense). On May 6, 1961, 1st FID became operational with Republic F-84 Thunderjet aircraft and began providing air defense service over Kilgore AFB. The squadron also received its first McDonnell Douglas M-DAR jet trainer/attack aircraft in 1963. 1st Fighter Division (Air Defense) achieved its full strength on September 5, 1966 when it activated the 141st Tactical Airlift Squadron under command of III Bomber Command at Florence AFB NAS Palmdale CA to providelift support for USAF units conducting operations in Southeast Asia during Operation Market Time II. Withdrawn from active duty on December 15, 1970 hostility towards America caused IX Bomber Command to be transferred from RAF Akrotiri AB Cyprus to RAF Bentley Priory DG England effective January 1971 flying North American Boeing KC-135 Stratotankers ferrying military personnel and equipment across international boundaries into Continental Europe during NATO's Cold War era standoff against Warsaw Pact forces. Inactivated on August 31, 1992 pursuant to Unified Combatant Commands policy regarding disbanded or inactive commands receiving no Atomic Weapons Effects Reduction Zone funding until theiractivation had been completed performance goals were met that year having previously failed three years prior. Inactivated unit colors are now displayed at various Air National Guard locations statewide as part of ANG history program

The Kilgore Air Force Base gift history goes back to the early days of the base when it was a small airstrip on the outskirts of town. The air force property was donated by Mrs. Lila (Lillie) Reid and Mr. Max Wiederman in 1938, and the first military personnel stationed at Kilgore were officers from Fort Worth Army Air Station. This small airstrip served as an important training ground for pilots and aircraft operators until World War II when Kilgore became an all-purpose airbase with a large hangar complex, fighter airfields, bomber fields, and artillery ranges. Kilgore AFB has had a variety of different gifts over the years from members of the public who have offered their time or money to support our troops or simply want to show appreciation for all that we do here at Kilgore AFB. Some of our most recent gifts include: In 2019, we hosted our 10th annual Christmas Party which was attended by many local military members and civilians including active duty service members, retirees, spouses/partners, parents/children, etc. We had lots of fun playing games and having refreshments while also giving away free items from our store!
Kilgore, Texas is located in the U.S. state of Texas and it is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of 2010, the population was 3,451. Kilgore has a history dating back to 1836 when traders discovered oil wells in what is now Kilgore County. The town was founded by Rangers who were sent to explore these wells and found that they had struck gas pockets which led to its growth. In 1907, Kilgore became an incorporated municipality and in 1951 it merged with nearby Mansfield to form one city. The city limits expanded until it reached all but the small town of Haskell which lies within Archer County borders on Kilgore proper. The economy of Kilgore is based primarily on agriculture and ranching activities with a limited number of manufacturing jobs being available outside of the city limits. Tourism plays a significant role in the local economy as visitors from all over come to enjoy attractions within and around the city limits including Pithole Well Museum, Fort Worth Zoo, Hill Country Park and Archer Lakefront Resort; making this an attractive location for both businesses and residents seeking quality time outdoors while still having access to important services within walking or driving distance

Kilgore is a town in Archer County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,831 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Worth–Archer City metropolitan area. Kilgore was founded in 1876 by white settlers and named for Stonewall Jackson. The post office was established in 1877, and the first store opened in 1880. In 1906, Kilgore's school district was consolidated with those of Archer and Stockton townsites to form the present-day Archer-Stockton School District. The community takes its name from Stonewall Jackson, who had a farm there during his lifetime and who is buried there. After he died in 1865, his widow sold the land to George Wacoal Jr., one of Kilgore's founders. Wacoal developed it into a small farming community that included kilns for coal production and other businesses around what is now Main Street. In 1926, Wacoal sold his land to Johnnie Ray Sutton along with some adjoining acreage for $2 per acre; this gave Sutton control over all of what remain today within the boundaries of Kilgore Township (including most of Interstate 10 east of town), as well as all or part of five other townships east or west thereof: Brushy Creek Township (northwest), Cowtown Township (southwest), Flower Mound Township (southeast), Lubbock Townships (northwest), and West Stockton Township (southwest). In 1955, when Archer County was created from parts of Dallas County, Kilgore became one of its original townsites.
