In 1840, a group of Texans led by General Sam Houston bought the land from the Wichita people for $2,500. The new owners set out to improve the land and establish a rancho. In 1845, Colonel William Hogg purchased 8 square miles (20 square kilometers) of what is now eastern Texas from General Houston for $5,000 dollars. This purchase added much needed grazing land to Eastern Texas and made it possible for settlers to start planting crops and build homes. In 1850, Lake Jackson became part of USTX when East Texas joined the United States. It remained a county seat until 1907 when it was moved to Dallascoweta County
Lake Jackson, Texas was named for General Sam Houston. The town of Huntsville was founded in 1836 by General Houston and his men as a way to keep their horses from being stolen by the Mexicans.
